Grand Prix Begins Filming in Jeju Island


Filming began on April 2 for Lee Jun-ki and Kim Tae-hee’s film Grand Prix, and here are the first stills. In the movie, the two are horse-racing jockeys who fall in love. Kim’s character Joo-hee suffers a major blow in confidence after she has an accident, and travels to Jeju Island to try to get over it.

Lee plays the character Woo-seok, who was once a promising jockey who lost his friend in an accident. He finds that he has a lot in common with Joo-hee, and helps her make a comeback.

Grand Prix is directed by Yang Yun-ho of Holiday and Fighter in the Wind, two films that emphasized tough men. He was also one of the directors on IRIS, and said of re-teaming with that drama’s star, “Kim Tae-hee has a sincere, honest personality. You’ll be able to see a new side to her as an actor in this movie.” The film is aiming for a release later this year.

Korean actor Lee Jun-ki will be leaving for the military next month, leading to a change of cast in a film and drama he was set to appear in before joining the army.

In a phone call with Asia Economic Daily on Wednesday, relevant sources from the film "Grand Prix" and TV series "Faith" said that they were casting an actor to replace Lee since he will be entering the military on May 3.

Last week, Lee's agency JG Company announced that the actor had received a notice from Korea's Military Manpower Administration but asked to defer his entrance date to fulfill his current work commitments before joining the two-year service.

Lee has been shooting "Grand Prix" with top Korean actress Kim Tae-hee since April 2 but it appears that he was unable to delay his military duties as he has now decided to pull out from both projects.

Lee, 27, gained fame in Korea and throughout Asia after playing a woman-like clown in the 2005 hit film "The King and the Clown" and most recently portrayed a passionate magazine reporter in MBC TV series "Hero".

Dramabeans: Lee Jun-ki quits film and drama for army duty

Military service has been looming for a while for Lee Jun-ki, but in a surprising turn, he has announced that he will enlist next week, on May 3. As a 1982-er, Lee would have to enlist by the end of this year, but he received his papers shortly after beginning his new film project.

This forces him not only to drop his upcoming drama Faith, which would have paired him with Kim Hee-sun and Philip Lee, but also his film Grand Prix, which has already begun shooting. Grand Prix is the horse-racing movie that co-stars Kim Tae-hee, and because of Lee’s last-minute dropout, the producers are currently filming all the parts that exclude his character while hurriedly casting Lee’s replacement.

Lee had attempted to postpone enlistment, as he had filled his work schedule through the end of the year, but was unable to do so.
