Hum Dil De Chuke Sanaam

More than anything else, I think people will disagree with me on this one. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam is slow-moving (lo dissi, ha la pecca di avere qualche lentezza), filled with melodrama and angst (lo dissi pure questo!), and has lots of behind-the-scenes baggage associated with it (ndkalla: meno di tanti altri, in verità - o sarà che ci son abituata). However, my argument for the film is simply that it is one of the first that I saw when I was getting into Bollywood and I loved it. I may not have knew about Helen or Aish and Salman's stormy relationship, but I loved the romance (entrambe, peraltro), colors (vero!), music (e i balletti! E anche certe scelte registiche, tipo l'entrata in scena della Rai!), and the acting (A parte Salman nella seconda parte e gli italiani - forse mi convinse meno perché si trovava nel suo habitat italiano e si doveva conformare? XD). I was sobbing with happiness at the end! While Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam is most definitely a Bollywood film, it is one that's accessible to Western audiences - especially those who already enjoy "foreign" films. The story is a fairly straight-forward romance with just a dash of family drama thrown in. Viewers don't need to keep track of piles of secondary characters and complicated relationships, we can just soak in the epic love triangle!
