Painter of the Wind - Summary 1This is my 1st attempted to do a sageuk drama. Using all the historical dramas I have seen as a base & the closes to the recent finished drama “Yi San” This drama is of that era, what was to be known as the Renaissance period of Joseon Dynasty? The arts were very much developed during this era. Seong Seon Yeon who later became Royal Consort Eui Bin was depicted as a 1st female painter in the Royal Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo) who advanced her painting career then only enter the palace at the aged of 29, which is a bit advance in age to be a Consort of the palace. Well that is another story. Although history can be dull but with the romanticised of these saeguk, it gives you some historical facts to it. I am not a historian bluff, but a moderate fan of the “wuxia” novels mainly the ones from Louis Cha & an avid fan of the NHK Taiga drama since 2002.
BackgroundThe year is 1766. Joseon Dynasty Royal Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo). Kang Soo Wan wanted to present “Saesun” (Crown Grandson, later Jeongjo), a portrait of his father the disgrace Crown Prince Sado. He secretly commission Royal Bureau of painting (Dohwaseo) artist Seo Jing to do the portrait. In the midst, he met his death. Investigation to the death of the Royal Bureau artist & his wife who was mysteriously brutally murder led to nowhere. Seo Jing’s daughter is missing without a trace
Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo) artist Kim Hong Do finds out about his good friend’s brutal death & tries to look for traces to his friend’s death but to no vain. However, he only managed to have found a portrait painting without a drawn face.
10 years later, Kim Hong Do returns to head the Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo) & to teach the apprentices. He wishes that every year he would meet some talents with potentials. This year have prove disappointing as the talents he meets are just average. However there is one that catches his attention….
Shin Yun Bok is a talented painter who disguised herself as a boy to search her father’s murderer & meets Kim Hong Do, a master painter who guides her into being a great painter. Kim Hong Do is the man who teaches Shin Yun Bok how to paint & they develop a strong friendship as mentor & disciple
Opening sceneKim Hong Do walks up the hill as a narrator to the story. There are inter cut scenes of Shin Yun Bok drawing (look like a self portrait), she is seen wearing in male clothes & female clothes hence her cross dressing. Kim Hong Do goes to an abandon house. As he opens the door, Shin Yun Bok looks up. He step in & enter the house, empty. Obviously it is seen that Shin Yun Bok & Kim Hong Do are in different time frame. In the empty house left behind Shin Yun Bok’s self portrait of herself in a hanbok mounted on a frame. Kim Hong Do touched it gingerly & cries for the lost.
Kim Hong Do: I will like to start to tell a story now about a person, my feelings are indeed of glad with joy & pain with sadness. If I think of her, I will feel glad with joy, however if I were to have lost her, I will be ridden with pain of sadness. She is already am my student, my teacher, my friend & also my love
Episode 1 – The journey paint from lifeBureau of Painting (Dohwaseo), the year 1777 the 1st year of Jeongjo reigns.
(This is also in the reign of Qing Dynasty Emperor Qian long (1711-1799), Qian long is a major patron of the art & he himself a great scholar in Arts & Literature. Obviously culture exchanges flourish during this period)
Copper coins are place on the 2 pallette dish (looks like a cereal bowl) each with tainted paint of red & blue. Obviously placing bets
Commentator 1: What are you doing? Yes is yes. No is no. Is it blue or red? Aigoo!
2 painters armed with a very big paint brush. They are Jang Hyo Won & Shin Yun Bok
Man Bu: Come, it had been 3 years that we have yet had a competition to compete.
The prize is an ink stone & a brush. Man Bu is one of the oldest apprentice artist who have been in Dohwaseo for 10 years looks more like a sport’s commentator.
(There are the 4 treasure of the study & painting, the ink stone, brush, paper & the ink stick. There are others auxiliary as well, pen (brush) holder, brush pot or holder, ink box, paper weights, seal & seal box. These are of course was being introduced extensively in the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. I personally have a set but there are more a decorative items on my cupboard than anything. I can do some paint brush calligraphy but being a left handed it have some restrictions. My teacher said I don’t have the patience too, hence it is in storage. I know how hard is it to control that brush with the amounts of ink that you need set it on paper. The control of the ink’s input is control by the wrist & the strength. It is almost that you need to have the picture or calligraphy in your mind before setting of to put in paper. Once the brush touches the paper, there is no room for mistakes)
Dohwaseo
Man Bu: Presenting the blue “must win”, Jang Hyo Won. Presenting the red, Royal Bureau of painting “odd ball” Shin Yun Bok. Look & See! Both parties have adjusted their intake of the inks in their brush. Look! These two concentrated competitor’s eyes are not of the ordinary.
Both painters dipping their brushes in the ink to see the density
Man Bu: By the looks of it, they are ready. They already have given the signal. Fine! Now…begin!
It looks like whose brush can last the longest with ink, as the painters’ runs through their brush on paper that had been laid on the floor
3 sport’s commentators giving a running commentary
Man Bu: If you want to succeed in this competition, the brush tip must be hold very upright to have bring out the full capacity of the brush
Commentator 2: This is true
Cheering: Shin Yun Bok! Shin Yun Bok!
Shin Yun Bok looking at Jang Hyo Won as she races down the paper & vice versa
(We will have to refer to Shin Yun Bok in the female text as she is indeed incognito as a man)
Commentator 2: It looks like Shin Yun Bok’s brush looks bend. It is bent
Commentator 3: No, it can’t be, it can’t be. It looks like the ink is running out. Ah! It is a battle strategy, strategy.
Man Bu: This brush techniques is rare to be seen in 10 years
Commentator 2: It is alright…alright…Jang Hyo Won, it is alright. There is more after this, he still can go on. It is alright (He looks like a Jang Hyo Won’s supporter trying to reassure himself more than Jang Hyo Won)
As Shin Yun Bok & Jang Hyo Won, races
Jang Hyo Won: Are you going to surrender? I am doing this for you is because I felt a great pity towards you
Shin Yun Bok: You already know your own limits, to say such things
Man Bu: Doing well, doing well, only this paint brush can determine the winner, the painter’s exams, you can breeze through it with flying colours
Commentator 3: Yes it is. You need to be used to the big brush that is from Qing Dynasty
Man Bu: Yes it is true, it is true. Men! This is the main point.
Commentator 2: Is it there a lack of substance? The ink is now exceeding the paper
Commentator 3: The paper, the paper is running out
Man Bu: How can the paper run out?
They run to add paper
Jang Hyo Won: If I had to lose to a feminine weak person like you, I wouldn’t have started this competition
Shin Yun Bok: What is there in that fist of yours?
Jang Hyo Bin: You, little boy is looking for a fight
Shin Yun Bok stop & looks surprise as she looks at the floor, Jang Hyo Won is continue then stop when Shin Yun Bok stop short on track
Jang Hyo Won: Why you have now reached to this stage, you want to give up?
Shin Yun Bok put her brush down
Shin Yun Bok: Really! You are really talkative. Sheng Tu Jang (Apprentice)! Thank you
Shin Yun Bok smiles & walk away. He then looks at the paper to find that his brush had run out of ink while Shin Yun Bok still had hers
Commentator 3: Come & look, this…win!!!!!!!
Commentator 3 is roaring with laugher
Commentator 2 goes to Jang Hyo Won
Commentator 2: What had happened? This….isn’t there some problem that arise from this matter…this
Jang Hyo Won: Shut up!
Jang Hyo Won goes & confronts, the other painters are collecting their winning. Shin Yun Bok takes the prize.
Shin Yun Bok: I have the opportunity to be able to use this precious brush from Qing Dynasty. I will treasure it
Jang Hyo Won: It looks like a pig wearing a necklace in its neck. You little boy is worthy enough to use this brush
Shin Yun Bok: Why? Hate to part with it? Then, you just need to address me as “Hyung Nim” (elder brother)
Jang Hyo Won: You little brat!
Shin Yun Bok: 3….2….
Jang Hyo Won: Yah!
Shin Yun Bok: 1
Jang Hyo Won: Hyung Nim
Shin Yun Bok: Aigoo! Said it a wee bit too slow. I will use this well.
Jang Hyo Won: Actually, this belong to my father
Jang Hyo Won hold Shin Yun Bok’s arm but Shin Yun Bok flings it away.
Shin Yun Bok: A man should honour his own words. & not like as a “wench”
Jang Hyo Won: Wench? How dare you call me a wench?
Jang Hyo Won tries to pick a fight with Shin Yun Bok
Shin Yun Bok: What is it? What?
The other tries to break them up. A voice came in shouting. He is actually Shin Yun Bok’s adopted father Shin Han Pyeong who holds the rank of Il Chul in Dohwaseo. Shin Yun Bok also has an elder brother Shin Young Bok in Dohwaseo. Shin Hang Pyeong is from a family of “Jungjin” (middle class). There are a family of reputable professional artists. Obviously have contributed their service to Dohwaseo for generations
Shin Hang Pyeong: What are you all group of people doing here? Do you wish to make a journey to paint from life? Do you wish not to go?
All: No…no…
Shin Hang Pyeong: Hasten & prepare well, Students. If I count up to 10 & if it is not prepare well, all will be cancelled
All: Teacher!!!
Shin Hang Pyeong: 1…2….3!!!!!!
Everybody scatters to prepare what they are assigned to do. Filling the ink pots, preparing food for the excursion, filling the flask with what I think is rice wine. The person filling is also having a fill with it. Another prepares the brushes to take to the excursion. Then Shin Yun Bok prepares herself for the excursion. She is seen strapping her chest down (it is the most decent description to give).
At the pavilion
The painters are adding colours to a drawing of a dragon. They testing the colours & painting it. It looks ferocious.
(Imperial dragons usually have 5 claws; commonly others will only have 3 claws. This looks like an imperial dragon).
Bal Hae is the person in charge of Dohwaseo. He has a court rank Pil Chul
Pil Chul: Where have all apprentices gone to? Why are you here doing it?
Painter: Pil Chul Orrishin, (his court rank) you are here
The painters stood up to greet him
Pil Chul: Why do I not see a single apprentice here?
Painter: This is the day in Spring season where journey of paint from life “Wei you Sa Sheng” commences
(“Wei You Sa Sheng” The journey (outdoor excursion) of paint from life is actually painting in the outdoors)
Pil Chul: The journey of paint from life. We are in the midst of painting the imperial dragon & today are the day to take this journey. Do you have any brains in that head of yours?
Painter: This is from Il Chul (Shin Hang Pyeong) Orrishin’s request to have these practices every year
Pil chul: That stubborn idiot…really
In a stream, nearby. Shin Hang Pyeong takes the apprentices for the outdoor excursion
Shin Hang Pyeong: Today is decree that we should draw the imperial dragon, all nation have been commanded. However, to miss this great eye opening beautiful spring day, this lesson in the journey to the outdoors. I as the teacher how can I stop you from appreciating such journey? Do you understand?
All: Yes. Thank you, Teacher
Shin Hang Pyeong: Fine…Fine. I will bear all responsibilities. We will take this opportunity. We are in the service of the Royal household artist; we need to put utmost effort in to it & not to be lack. Do you understand?
Shin Yun Bok feeling the atmosphere & using her brush to trace to outline the hill with her brush then towards a gisaeng riding a horse lead by servants crossing a bridge
All: Yes
Shin Hang Pyeong: What is there to see over there?
All eyes on the bridge as the gisaengs cross the bridge giving out free smiles & waves. The apprentices who are sitting at the banks of the stream are gapping with their mouth open
Commentator 2: Aigoo! This group of women are really soft & gentle. Which “giban” (House of courtesan) do they belong to? Look at the woman who is wearing red
Jang Hyo Won: You really have no hind sight. Look carefully the one who is at the back row, that she is the lead. Do you know?
Commentator 3 eyes on a very heavy well develop gisaeng. He is also of the same size
Commentator 3: Ah! This looks prosperous
Shin Yun Bok: Prosperous?
Commentator 3: Prosperous in flesh is prosperous. This is to say this woman had the most prosperity
Shin Yun Bok: This is how the Yanban looks at gisaengs. Both eyes open wide
Man Bu: Aigoo! When was the time that you can fully understand women? Hundred flowers blossom with many school of thoughts, round fat & slim thin, there are many different types. The matter is which you prefer. Do you understand?
Shin Yun Bok: Hyung Nim, how many women have you seen that you have already understand?
Man Bu begins to counts with his fingers
Man Bu: 1…2…3…4
Commentator 3 stops him & look on
Commentator 3: Then, which type do you like?
Shin Yun Bok: I? Can’t say?
The Mistress of the house looks behind
Mistress: You wenches behind, why are you simply sending smiles? Did I said before without my permission, you are forbidden not to cry nor smile
The gisaengs shut their mouth at their Mistress’s reprimands.
Shin Hang Pyeong: You little brats, what are you staring at? When I was a Royal bureau artist, I wasn’t moved by any woman. Look at you boys, just look at what you are doing? I really shouldn’t have brought you all out. Aigoo! Do you not want to draw, isn’t it?
Shin Yun Bok track the last person on the row
All: No, we want to!!!!
Shin Hang Pyeong: Little brats. You have the evening to finish your drawing & after that you will regroup here at this location, do you understand?
All: Yes
Everybody scram for location
Shin Hang Pyeong: This…this… this…really
Shin Yun Bok bows to Shin Hang Pyeong
Shin Yun Bok: I’m off
Shin Hang Pyeong: Yes. This is an outdoor excursion to paint, just treat as a form of relaxation. Just relax to draw your painting
Shin Yun Bok: Yes
Shin Young Bok: Abuji, I also off
Shin Hang Pyeong: Yes. Please look after him. You should know him. His future is not just limits to being just a Royal Bureau artist. There will be a day he will become excel as a master painter of his own rights. This will bring great fame & reputation to our Shin family
Shin Young Bok: If you don’t ask of me, I will also do the same & look after him well
Shin Hang Pyeong: Fine. I trust you. Carry on
Shin Young Bok sets off to follow Shin Yun Bok
A visiting lady comes in under the cover of the cloak. A lady of the manor greets her with a lowly bow. She is Queen Dowager Jeong Sun.
(Queen Dowager Jeong Sun of the Kim clan married the old Yeongjo at 18. Poor girl was “sold” by her clan for power. She was even younger that her daughter in law (Queen Heongyeong, mother of Jeongjo. Her title “Queen” was give posthumously later by King Gojong) by 10 years. But she managed to reel & wield in the power that her clan craved for to control the palace during Yeongjo’s reign. During Jeongjo it was managed to suppress down but only until his death (as we had seen in Yi San). His poor son Sunjo was very much a puppet King as Queen Jeong Sun became Regent later her clansman for the young King Sunjo. Sunjo’s son Royal Prince Successor tried to break the control but didn’t live long to pull it off. So much for history lesson)
Manor lady: You have arrived; the person had waited for you for a while?
In the room, a man wearing a straw hat in simple clothes pours a drink to himself. Queen Jeong Sun is with the man divided by a thin bamboo screen. A secret rendezvous with an old flame perhaps
Queen Jeong Sun: All this years, there weren’t any news of you
Straw man: I wanted to wander around to contemplate my feelings & have contemplated many thousand & hundred of things not for myself
Queen Jeong Sun: Don’t you & I have something of a past promises & asked a person to yearn dearly longing. How can I make you understand? It is bitter & painful
Straw man’s hand come over the bamboo screen & invites her
Straw man: Come here, this could really be the final time to have this moment
Queen Jeong Sun crosses over, straw hat rolls away.
At the exterior fencing, butterfly resting on a flower. Shin Yun Bok walking around with Shin Young Bok following him like a bodyguard
Shin Yun Bok: When are you going to stop following me?
Shin Young Bok: Where you go, I will follow?
Shin Yun Bok: Hyung Nim, until when are you going to stop following me?
Shin Young Bok: Yun Bok, I will like to say this again, don’t you remember “tongyak” (the elements of nature) method. Pine wood, mountain water, animals, people, plants. They have to go according to that order. One’s painting is of how good but minus these elements….
Shin Yun Bok: Hyung Nim, isn’t outdoor excursion is the topic for us to free will to do our drawing Then what is use of the “tongyak”
Shin Young Bok: Yes, it is. Then, what are you going to draw?
Shin Yun Bok: Why do you care what I draw? Hyung Nim is Hyung Nim, I am I. We will go our separate ways. Can we just do it?
Shin Young Bok: Younger brother! In a family why are you so calculative down to bridges & roads?
Shin Young Bok tries to hug his brother to carry on walking. Shun Yun Bok stop him
Shin Yun Bok: No matter what, Hyung Nim goes that way, & I go this way
Shin Yun Bok turns to her brother around to the direction
Shin Yun Bok: I count to 3 & will set off. 1…2…3
Shin Young Bok tries to turn but was force to turn his face front, pushes him away as he count to 3 & runs away, by the time Shin Young Bok turns around there was no sign of Shin Yun Bok to be seen. Shin Young Bok shouts to his brother
Shin Young Bok: You need to finished before the sun set
Shin Yun Bok was hiding on top of the fence as she sees her brother leaving. She is happy
Shin Yun Bok: Aigoo! This is great.
Shin Yun Bok peeps over the fence & it is a manor. She sees a regal lady (Queen Jeong Sun) wearing an apron taking a stroll walking with a straw hat carry behind her back at the manor’s courtyard. Shin Yun Bok is taken by the lady’s beauty. Shin Yun Bok outlines her as she stand at a corner gazing at a distance & started taking her paper out & dip her brush on her tongue to moist it to draw. Shin Yun Bok captures the regal lady’s composure. Her outline & background, her hair, her neck, her clothes, her holding the straw hat behind her back, her shoes, her mole on her ear
The lady in waiting (Sang gung) comes to her
Sang gung: It have been prepared
Queen Jeong Sun: Let’s go
Sang gung bows to her as they set off, then she sees Shin Yun Bok on the fence
Queen Jeong Sun: What is that?
Sang gung: What are you referring to?
Queen Jeong Sun pointing towards the fence
Queen Jeong Sun: That, over there?
Then Shin Yun Bok knew she was spotted & exit to flees
Sang gung: Who are you, boy? Someone, is there anyone around
Shin Yun Bok couldn’t keep her balance & drops on the ground
Sang gung: Someone comes catch that boy
The gates open & the servants comes out to catch Shin Yun Bok
Servant: After him, after him
Shin Yun Bok makes a run for it knocking passer by, running through village alleys, into a busy street. Knocking bystander & take hiding in a clothes shop, Shin Yun Bok tries to regain her breathe, when a gisaeng choosing cloth, looks at her
Jeong Hyang: Do you mind if you could stand up?
Shin Yun Bok was standing on the cloth. Jeong Hyang takes the clothes & folds it. Shin Yun Bok inspects her outline. Jeong Hyang walks away as Shin Yun Bok continues to track her as though thirsting for her
Shin Yun Bok: The Gisaengs are indeed a flower blossom.
Jeong Hyang: A flower blossom that is not easy for someone to pluck
Shin Yun Bok: A person who know beauty
Jeong Hyang: But I am no wild flower
Shin Yun Bok: A flower isn’t it, for someone to be praise
Meanwhile sees the servants from the manor searching, duck for cover. Jeong Hyang wonders what the commotion & sees the servant going off to another direction
Servant: Where did he go…over there?
Shin Yun Bok: Miss, please don’t…make a sound
She smiles & tries to but Shin Yun Bok stops her
Shin Yun Bok: Please don’t
Jeong Hyang: Excuse me over here,
Shin Yun Bok: Are you crazy?
Shin Yun Bok climb on her to stop her then realise that there is no one. She realise that Jeong Hyang had fooled her.
Shin Yun Bok: Ah! A flower that has thorns & also poisonous.
Shin Yun Bok leaves while Jeong Hyang looks on with some interest
Jeongjo is doing a ceremonial ritual for rain. Spring is the season to start cultivating, so rain is the essence for irrigation
Lord Chamberlain: Bow! (All present genuflects on the ground as Jeongjo takes altar stand)
It is the picture of the imperial dragon which may be the representation of China
Decree the 43rd year of the reign of Qianlong, Jeongjo 1st year ascend on April, Eastern Sea Joseon Dynasty King Yi San decree to mother earth & heavens, asked that Qing will be peaceful & bountiful aplenty, present this imperial dragon to watch over it.
Jeongjo: Present the gift for the offering; it will be bountiful harvest to come. Cabinet must adhere to the decree
All: We will adhere
Queen Jeong Sun quickly returns to her chambers in her palanquin. She then changes to her royal robes with palace maids in attendances, then make up, ornaments on her hair. She then sent the palace maids to leave as her private Sang gung comes in
Queen Jeong Sun: How is it?
Sang gung: We are still searching for him. Because this outing was done in secret so there are some…
Queen Jeong Sun slams her hand on the table
Queen Jeong Sun: If this is discover by people, what is going to be of it?
Sang gung: I am sorry
Queen Jeong Sun is anxious
Queen Jeong Sun: This is the day the whole nation is at the site to do the offering ritual, secretly went to have this rendezvous. If this matter is to be known by Chusan (His Majesty), what are we to do?
Sung Gung: Ma Ma (Your highness)
Queen Jeong Sun tries to remember
Queen Jeong Sun: What was he trying to draw? What did he see?
The painters return to their dormitory. Everybody express tiredness
Commentator 3: What did you draw?
Shin Young Bok: Is there a drawing to be passed up?
Shin Yun Bok: If there isn’t any drawing pass up, I wouldn’t be able to sit here?
Shin Young Bok: What did you draw?
Shin Yun Bok: Appreciation of spring, of course it should be the topic of flower blossom
Man Bu: Man like us, why draw flowers? What is seen, you should at least come out with scenery of a person enjoying the water, isn’t it?
Commentator 3: Yes, it is. What the use is there, the most important is the content?
Shin Yun Bok: Anyhow the excursion to paint from life is an open topic, it doesn’t matter what we draw
Man Bu: You can say that just in passing, why wouldn’t it matter? It looks like you all don’t know the meaning behind this excursion of paint from life
Shin Young Bok: Excursion of paint from life isn’t it an outdoor excursion in spring, then goes out to find ones inspiration. Everybody know about it. Man Bu Hyung
Man Bu: Aigoo! Another one who is really naïve? Excursion of paint from life is an opportunity to bring out potential talent or else it is also seen as elimination. The upper management know our every step of what we are doing?
Shin Yun Bok: Is it true?
Commentator 3: Do they know who drew the drawings? I just drew very average.
Shin Young Bok: If so, that if someone doesn’t draw well, what will happened?
Commentator 3: Couldn’t be?
Man Bu: True, of course it is. If it is done wrongly, because of a piece of painting it may cost your head to be cut off, this is what happened often at Dohwaseo
Everybody brushes it off
Man Bu: Why should I lie to you? Do you think I am being funny? Am I that kind of person? What do you think Dohwaseo is?
Shin Yun Bok looks nervous
Shin Yun Bok: What you are saying is it true then?
Man Bu: I have been an apprentice for the past 10 year at Dohwaseo sitting here idle away my time
Commentator 2: Aigoo! This Hyung is really something, saying it yet again. Give way. (asking them to give some space for him to sit down. Really! Last year, nothing grave had happened. The year before last nothing had happened also, what make you think that this year will be other wise?
Man Bu is lose for words
Commentator 2: Why, nothing else to say? Really, you were just playing with the boys. I’m going
Shin Young Bok: Really, to say frightening things to raise an alarm for everybody
Other 1: What you say is always nonsense
Other 2: Is it so?
Other 3: As a person shouldn’t be so
Everybody went on their way. Shin Yun Bok was too sure that it is just nonsensical talk
At the Palace, Queen Jeong Sun’s chambers. Jeongjo is having tea with Queen Jeong Sun. Sang gung serve them tea.
Queen Jeong Sun: Please drink
Jeongjo: Yes
Both raise their tea cup & drink
Jeongjo: Ma Ma, what have you been bust these days?
Queen Jeong Sun: There is nothing special there is to do?
Jeongjo: Spring is here. Ma Ma should go to the pavilion to enjoy the spring’s sunshine
Queen Jeong Sun: Chusan, you really know how to put it kindly?
Jeongjo: How can it be? So Sun (Royal Grandson) today gone to the mountain to do the ritual
Queen Jeong Sun: Chusan is so concern for one’s country & one’s people. It will touch heavens & the rains will come. I (Hare Me – Grandmother) too am concern about the people with some pain
Jeongjo: Is that so? What should you bring fatigue to your health?
Queen Jeong Sun: That I will take care of it well
Jeongjo is playing cat & mouse with Queen Jeong Sun
Jeongjo: Then…you…please look through
Jeongjo takes out a trinket (It looks like a portable compass). Sung gung looks nervous
Queen Jeong Sun: What is this?
Jeongjo: It is a mini compass. It is a gift from Qing Dynasty
Queen Jeong Sun: A compass?
Jeongjo: Yes
Jeongjo picks it up
Jeongjo: No matter where you are at, it can point you to direction
Jeongjo & Queen Jeong Sun exchange glances as Jeong passes the compass to her. She picks it up
Queen Jeong Sun: Point to the direction
Jeongjo drinks his tea & smiles. Queen Jeong Sun sees Jeongjo off
Jeongjo: Then you turn in for the night early, Ma Ma
Queen Jeong Sun: I will do that. Goodnight
Jeongjo & his entourage leave Queen Jeong Sun’s chambers. Queen Jeong Sun turns around angrily & asked her Sang gung
Queen Jeong Sun: Who can it be?
Sang gung: From the facts gather from our investigation, he is an apprentice from Dohwaseo.
Queen Jeong Sun: Dohwaseo?
Sang gung: Yes
Queen Jeong Sun: Then you go to Dohwaseo & bring back all the drawing works that was drawn today, quickly!
Sang gung: Yes, Ma Ma
Full moon night, Dohwaseo, the palace maids are taking stacks of drawings out
Pil chul: In this late in the night, what bring you here? Why don’t you answer me?
Sang gung: This is the order of the Queen Dowager, to collect all drawings works that were drawn today from Dohwaseo. Your actions must be done quickly
Palace Maid: All are being wrapped already
Sang gung: Let’s leave
Pil Chul: This is going too far. Look down on us at Dohwaseo
Another official comes in to see that they have empty the whole room’s drawing
Painter: What has happened here?
Pil Chul: I will definitely not forgive that person who caused this trouble.
He cracks walnuts with his grip
Queen Jeong Sun searching through the drawings piece by piece frantically with her Sang gung. She finds the drawing & bangs the table
Queen Jeong Sun: Find this person immediately
Official: How can this kind of drawing are found in Dohwaseo? Said what are you going to do about it?
Official passes around to the senior painters
Pil Chul: This lady is feature at the centre of the drawing vacillating near the withered tree. This is absolutely impudent. Have a look
Painter: This is absurd
Painting is passes round & Shin Hang Pyeong had a look at it before handing back to the Official
Official: Summon this apprentice to come here at once
Pil Chul: However this drawing doesn’t have a signature that authored it
Official: What?
Pil Chul: Apprentice’s drawings don’t come with signatures. Before they become full fledge artist there are forbidden to put & seal their names to their drawings
Official: The person who is charge of tutelage of these apprentices can be able to recognise whose drawings are these. Who is it?
Shin Hang Pyeong: That will be…
Official: Will that be you?
Shin Hang Pyeong: Yes it is I, outdoor excursion to paint from life, is to allow the apprentice to go out of the restriction & self explore their potentials
Official: What you are saying, there is no way in finding who drew this?
Shin Hang Pyeong: Yes, it is so
Official bangs his fist on the table which set a fright to everybody seated at the table
Official: Queen Dowager had given an order to see this person, what are you going to do about it?
Pil chul: This is all because of your outdoor excursion, had contributed. This is the day that is the ceremonial ritual of the imperial dragon. Why did you bring the apprentices out on an excursion?
Shin Hang Pyeong: This is really. This is what our Dohwaseo every year’s had set practices, why should it be different this year?
Pil Chul: If it wasn’t you who brought the apprentices out, will this kind of “chun hwa” (literally Spring flowers but the under meaning is phonographic. In the west it will be known as blue film, in the east it is know as the yellow film) degrading drawings is the result of it
Shin Hang Pyeong: Chun Hwa…Chun hwa…can this is categorised as Chun Hwa?
Official: No need to add anymore. I need to report this back to the Queen Dowager. At this period, no matter what, you definitely need to find that apprentice who drew the drawing out immediately
Official leaves the room in a huff. Shin Hang Pyeong looks worried
Pavilion apprentice in the punishment position of getting a whack in the buttocks. Shin Hang Pyeong is punishing the apprentices
Shin Hang Pyeong: You little brats….you brats. When you went for the outdoor excursion, who is it drew this piece of drawing of a woman. Is it you (Commentator 3)?
Commentator 3: No, it is not
Shin Hang Pyeong: Then is that you (Commentator 1)?
Man Bu: How could it be me?
Shin Hyang Pyeong: Little brats. If you don’t owe up, who is it?
Commentator 2: No it is not I, definitely not me.
Shin Hang Pyeong: Yes it will not be, you standards are not to par. It will not be you
Everybody stole some laughter
Shin Hang Pyeong: Who is it, who was laughing?
Shin Hang Pyeong stood next to Shin Yun Bok
Shin Yun Bok: I….Teacher
Shin Hang Pyeong looks at him & walks off
Shin hang Pyeong: Little brats, each of you come one by one to my room
Looks like interrogating with a person jotting down the statement. Shin Hang Pyeong interviews Jang Hyo Won, who doesn’t look bothered
Shin Hang Pyeong: Honestly tell the truth, it is alright. What is there, when I was young like you, when I look at a woman, I will give 2 glances to look at her & have fantasy. Is it you?
Jang Hyo Won: Am I crazy? How would I draw such a painting?
Shin Hang Pyeong: You little brat. You are just like father like son. Next!!!
Interview Commentator 3
Commentator 3: Honestly speaking…
Shin Hang Pyeong: Yes, it is….so it is you…
Commentator 3: I have a fear with women. I dare not even look them straight at them
Shin Hang Pyeong: You Really! Useless….Next!!!!
Interviewing Commentator 2
Commentator 2: Orrishin!
Shin Hang Pyeong: Yes. Come let hear it
Commentator: Didn’t you just say that my standard is not up to par
Shin Hang Pyeong: Yes it is, how can it be you?….Next!!!!
Interview Man Bu
Man Bu: You should know that I have wife & kid, I have never be close to a woman, Honestly speaking, the drawing is nothing to be said of. How can it called Chun Hwa?
Shin Hang Pyeong: It is enough. That’s all. Get out. Next!!!
It is Shin Yun Bok. Shin Hang Pyeong empties his pipe on an ashtray
Shin Yun Bok: That…Abuji…that drawing
Shin Hang Pyeong: Yes, you feel like whose drawing is that? Just a wild guess of 70 -80%, Although I didn’t mentioned it but this matter is of grave importance. The matter that Queen Dowager is now involved, we definitely can’t let this matter jumps this hurdle so easily.
Shin Yun Bok: The Queen Dowager?
Shin Hang Pyeong: Yun Bok, there is not need for you to be afraid. We just need to find the person who drew it. Our Dohwaseo will return back to normalcy. You need not give any thought of worry on this. You just need to concentrated on the getting prepare for the artist’s exams. Do you understand? You may leave. Who is next?
Tucking to bed, with her elder brother Shin Young Bok
Shin Yun Bok: That drawing, does Hyung Nim think that it was way out of line?
Shin Young Bok: Just feel a little strange
Shin Yun Bok: What is so strange?
Shin Young Bok: I have been here for 3 years as an apprentices, it is the 1st time I have seen a woman drew as a main topic
Shin Yun Bok: Is drawing a woman all that wrong? I feel that is even more stranger
Shin Young Bok: What is that?
Shin Yun Bok: You can see, every time men will bring out a discussion is definitely the subject of women. Once they see a beautiful woman, they will fumble in their steps until don’t know what. Why when it comes to drawing, it can’t. Isn’t that even weird?
Shin Young Bok: That is ….
Shin Yun Bok stares at her brother Shin Young Bok then realise himself & tuck himself to bed
Shin Young Bok: Because seeing a woman will arouse the feelings in the heart
(Obviously Shin Young Bok should know of his younger brother’s real gender & may have feelings for her)
Shin Yun Bok: You can put in your heart but you can never put in on paper. Hyung Nim, do you have one? Is there some woman that you have put in your heart?
Shin Young Bok gets up in protest
Shin Young Bok: What? Nonsense! Go to bed!!!
Shin Young Bok with his back towards Shin Yun Bok
Shin Yun Bok: Oh! There is….who is she…come say it
Shin Young Bok: What have, there isn’t?
Shin Yun Bok turns her brother around
Shin Yun Bok: Tell it to me, I will let anyone else know
Shin Young Bok flings his younger brother down
Shin Yun Bok: Really! What a temper! It is so, the likes Hyung Nim who is so timid, how can you know of any woman. Sleep well
Shin Young Bok turns round
Shin Young Book: Sleep well
Shin Young Bok blow off the light
In Queen Jeong Sun’s chamber. Queen Jeong Sun slams her hand on the table
Queen Jeong Sun: What? Don’t know who he is?
Sang gung: I beg your pardon (Sorry)
Queen Jeong Sun: Are the apprentices in hundreds or are they even pass thousands? Just to add them all up it is roughly only that 80 something, you are here tell me that you can’t do it
Sang gung: However, the artists who comes to Dohwaseo are from reputable artist family
Queen Jeong Sun: So….
Sang gung: If the Officials in Dohwaseo are harbouring their boy, your humble servant have no way in on this
Queen Jeong Sun: Then what solution have you got on this matter?
Sang gung: Ma Ma, in Dohwaseo itself is now in the midst of finding that person who drew it
Queen Jeong Sun: Let them know, before the ritual ceremony is over, they need to find that person. Convey the seriousness to the Official in charge of Dohwaseo. Do you understand?
Sang Gung: Yes, Ma Ma
Queen Jeong Sun is not pleased with the progress look agitated
Dohwaseo
Official: Before the ritual ceremony, need to find that person this is what have been ordered? So what you all going to do about it?
Shin Hang Pyeong: If we proceed with this further, the apprentices will so frighten with fear to their death, who will take this responsibility? In this way, how can we find the person, we still don’t know? If it was this
Official: If it was this…we don’t know if Queen Dowager personally will summon all the apprentice to be interrogated. They are just a group of children, would they be able to leave in one piece
All the Dohwaseo officials foresee what may happen if the apprentices were to have a day with the Queen Dowager
Pil Chul: If, that person, would he be likely to be executed?
Painter: What are you saying?
Pil Chul: …..Banish to Miu Hyang San
Painter: Miu Hyang San?
A brush free will on the paper. It looks like Kim Hong Do
Painter: He just need to see the brush stroke, he can determine who drew the painting? His eyes are very sharp
Pil Chul slam the table
Pill Chul: No you can’t. Chusan Chona’s (His Majesty) dote upon without standards & hierarchy how can we allow this kind of artist to enter Dohwaseo?
Shin Hang Pyeong: Yes, Tam won (is Kim Hong Do’s pen name, Shin Yun Bok’ herself would have her pen name will be eventually known as Hye Won) that kind of weed of course is a no. A person without any morals & disciplines, if enters Dohwaseo, how can we have our apprentices see him as a guidance?
Painter: If it wasn’t for this person, how can we suppose to find out who the person who drew that drawing?
Pil Chul: If not, our apprentices wouldn’t be spare from bodily torture.
Painter 2: I also do not agree, however…
Official: There is no need to say further, if we don’t find who the apprentice is, don’t say for those who are all here, even I will not be spare from giving up my head. It comes to this, do you people can take the matter as nothing. If you have no other comments, then I will decide on the matter
Jeongjo looking at the scrolls
Jeongjo: What is this? Why in Dohwaseo have placed palace guards?
Official: This is Queen Dowager’s orders
Jeongjo: Queen Dowager’s?
Jeongjo having a stroll with Queen Jeong Sun
Jeongjo: What is the matter?
Queen Jeong Sun: This is progress for the people’s to have a proper square meal. In order to record the life of the Royal Household, Dohwaseo, how can such a phonographic drawing make an appearance? It is preposterous
Jeongjo: Your word has its reason, however Ma Ma how do you come to know that the drawing was drawn by an apprentice from Dohwaseo?
Queen Jeong Sun stop short from her stroll
Queen Jeong Sun: Chusan, Are you now cross examining my words?
Jeongjo: Cross examining, you are sadly mistaken?
Queen Jeong Sun: These have its seriousness implications. I will personally see to it that I will catch this person of such degrading of virtues. You can be rest assured. This is what your “Hare Me” (Grandmother) can help to assist you with, isn’t it?
Jeongjo: Sueson (Grandson) realise your intention on the matter, so I decided to assign someone that is suitable for the task.
Queen Jeong Sun: Assign a suitable person, who are you referring to?
Jeongjo: he is Tam Won. Tam Won, Kim Hong Do
Queen Jeong Sun is surprise at the choice
Queen Jeong Sun: Tam Won, Kim Hong Do. It’s him
Jeongjo: In the year of Yak guan (20 years ago) gave me a painting, he is a gifted painter. It was when I was still Saesun (Crown Grandson), my study room, the wind screen placed in the room was painted personally from Tam Won’s hands. It is the ones that you personally like it too
Queen Jeong Sun: However…
Jeongjo: If it is him, there shouldn’t be any problem to the matter
Dohwaseo
Pil Chul: He will definitely bring waves of troubles to our Dohwaseo. This is of certain
Painter: Until he finds out who’s the apprentice, we will handle from there
Shin Hang Pyeong is also worried
Shin Hang Pyeong: I really don’t understand
A house in Han yang
Girl: What? Tam Won….It is Tam Won. Orrabunim, Tam Won will return back to Han yang
Brother: That shouldn’t imply anything, is that man going to marry you?
Girl: Really, he is going to return, is it?
Brother: Are you so happy?
Girl: Orrabunim, really
Her brother just laugh at his sister naïve excitement

Kim Hong Do makes his escape by jumping of the water fall ravine into the water. He enters the deep waters below, near drowning, he dreams of a lady in a hanbok as she turns then reaching her hand as he tries to hold her hand, eventually managed to hold on to a stick in which he was pull out from the water where Kim Hong Do trying to catch some air

Kim Hong Do is happy that he could capture a tiger on paper
Old Man: Regain your consciousness
There were 2 guards beside the old man
Old Man: Han yang have sent these men to invite Mr Tam Won back to Han yang
Guard 1 looking suspiciously strangely at Kim Hong Do’s camouflage attire
Gusrd 1: Are you really Mr Tam Won?
Kim Hong Do still catching his breath nodded in acknowledgement

Guard 1: Mr Tam Won, you must be hungry, just have a bowl of broth then we go
Kim Hong Do: Ah! It will be great. While catching the tiger is my favourite capture. I lost my spectacles. I will go & get one fitted. I will go there first
Soldier: Then please proceed. Take care
Kim Hong Do stops by a store that sells spectacles. He tries a sunglasses the pick a glass one to look through the surrounding.
Meanwhile Shin Yun Bok is in a store trying to have a painting framed
Owner: To make as a horizontal inscribed board for usage? All of it
Shin Yun Bok: Yes. How long it will take?
Owner: The works takes 2 meal time
Shin Yun Bok: Eh! 1 meal time.
Owner: If you want not on par workmanship then I am afraid that the person will be able to see through the flaws
Shin Yun Bok: Ah! So it is. Alright! Do it properly for me, please.
Owner: Then you go in & look at the new arrival painting I have in the shop. I have a piece that is newly arrived drawn by Mr Tam Won
Shin Yun Bok: Mr Tam Won’s painting. Where is it?
Owner: It is over there, but there is already a buyer, so you need to be very careful in looking at it
Shin Yun Bok’s eyes is already pin on the painting
Shin Yun Bok: I know
Meanwhile Kim Hong Do is trying out his new spectacles as he walks around then he spots the drawing at the shop. He walks over to give a more detail look at it as Shin Yun Bok approaching it on the other side. Both of them hold to one end of the painting simultaneously & realise each other’s presence. A tussle between them starts as who have the rights to it
Shin Yun Bok: Please let go of it
Kim Hong Do laughs
Kim Hong Do: This young man, is really something
Shin Yun Bok: I took a liking in appreciation to this painting first, so I wouldn’t be polite
Kim Hong Do: Is appreciation of painting is there a first & last to it? If you say so, then I wanted to see this, 10 years ago
Shin Yun Bok: There are so many other paintings here to see, just let me see this one first
Kim Hong Do & Shin Yun Bok each refuse to let go of the painting
Kim Hong Do: Ah! You little brat!!!
Shin Yun Bok: Please don’t said little brat, it is a prick to the ear
As they struggle to get a better grip on the painting almost having a tug o war & eventually the evitable was tearing the painting into halves & Shin Yun Bok falls to the floor. Then they realise that the painting is torn. The owner was shocked to have seen what has become of his Mr Tam Won’s painting.
Owner: Disaster, a real disaster. This is so precious. What to do? What should be done?
Shin Yun Bok looking at the ground while Kim Hong Do is looking at the sky
Owner: Tonight someone will be here to pick it up. I am asking you what am I going to do? This painting have already be given a deposit. I have already told you be careful looking at it
Shin Yun Bok: Owner, I am really sorry.
Owner: What is the use of being sorry? You said….this is priceless beyond saying. Aigoo! I’m finished. What am I going to do?
Owner is wailing at his lost
Kim Hong Do: This…how much does this painting cost? Is it that exaggerated?
Owner: You look closely. This is genuine Mr Tam Won’s painting. Mr Tam Won. You have seen it. It is worth 300 nyang…300 nyang
Shin Yun Bok is shocked on the price
Shin Yun Bok: 3….300…300 nyang…nyang
Kim Hong Do takes it from the Owner to have a better look
Kim Hong Do: Ah! This is worth 300 nyang
Owner: Did I say that this is Mr Tam Won’s…Mr Tam Won? How are you going to …compensate…pay?
Shin Yun Bok: Can I just give you a drawing, wouldn’t that be alright? I will draw it exactly as it is
Owner: Are you mad? This is Joseon most accomplished painter, is it the likes of you? You little brat like you can you produce exactly the same as this. It will be laughing stock
Shin Yun Bok: No, please wait a moment
Shin Yun Bok takes a brush from her sleeve, takes the painting & rushes in. Kim Hong Do is dumbfounded. Shin Yun Bok prepares the paper & starts to draw as Kim Hong Do look closely at Shin Yun Bok. The Owner left them to finished the painting
Kim Hong Do: Do you feel if there are any differences in it?
Shin Yun Bok is too deep concentrating to answer Kim Hong Do
Kim Hong Do: When you are drawing the pine tree, the brush stroke should be, isn’t that way, it should be done in a single breath, a single stroke & once. Use strength stroke by stroke
Shin Yun Bok: You…can you sit still & be quiet for a while
Kim Hong Do holds Shin Yun Bok’s hand to guide her.
Kim Hong Do: It is not correct. This is a vine, you should add some moisture to the brush.
Kim Hong Do testing the density of the ink in the palm of his other hand
Kim Hong Do: Like this….it should be of this way
Kim Hong Do then guides Shin Yun Bok to the paper to show her how it is done
Kim Hong Do: Then one stroke…one stroke in, then travel downwards, one stroke then disperse slightly then travel upwards
Shin Yun Bok pushes Kim Hong Do away.
Shin Yun Bok: What do you know? This is Mr Tam Won’s painting. It is famous for being light & bold & flows in its brush strokes. Do you listen to understand?
Kim Hong Do laughs
Kim Hong Do: Is that so?
Shin Yun Bok: Yes it is so. When putting the brush stroke, we need to have it flowing, this only can be Mr Tam Won’s painting works. It is not for anybody? You just sit tight there & look
Kim Hong Do: Oh! It looks like you are very well verse. Then Mr Tan Won & you, are you acquaintances?
Shin Yun Bok: You are very nagging? Yes, are acquaintances? Mr Tam Won? I know him…very well in fact
Kim Hong Do: How did you come to be his acquaintance?
Shin Yun Bok didn’t answer him
Kim Hong Do: When did you learn to draw like that?
Shin Yun Bok: I need to finished this quickly. I beg with you to keep quiet for a moment, can you do that?
The guards came
Guard 1: Didn’t you say you just want to get a pair of spectacles, why are you doing here?
Kim Hong Do: You all have finished eating so quickly. I am also hungry
Guard 1: there is no time left, we need to hurry on our way
Kim Hong Do: Then, that fine
Kim Hong Do set off to leave, Shin Yun Bok stops him
Shin Yun Bok: Wait a moment, where do you think you are going? We should share halve this mess. Give me 150 nyang
Kim Hong Do: 150 nyang? Young man, I am currently slightly busy
Shin Yun Bok: Hey! Hey! 150 nyang
Kim Hong Do: It will be alright, just do well with the painting
Kim Hong Do leaves with the guards
Shin Yun Bok: Hey! Hey! We have tear someone’s painting, we should at least pay for the damages. Hey, you beggar!!!!!
Entrance of Dohwaseo
Kim Hong Do gets down from his horse
Kim Hong Do: We have arrived
Guard 1: Please go in
Kim Hong Do: It been hard, job well done
Guard 1: Yes
Kim Hong Do dusted himself off the dust & looks at the entrance of Dohwaseo
Kim Hong Do: It has been a long time. Have I come a little too late?
Kim Hong Do goes in to see Pil Chul
Kim Hong Do: How are you?
Pil Chul: It have been a long time. You must be tired, please sit down
Kim Hong Do: Thank you. My legs, my old bones (massaging his legs). It only have been this few steps, really
Pil Chul laughs
Kim Hong Do: You look as though you are still very young
Pil Chul: You are the same
Kim Hong Do: It is fine as long as the scenery is great. On Orrishin’s great fortunes I could travel far & wide to able to see many scenery. It is rewarding.
Pil Chul: You feel at home whatever one is. Mr Tam Won, you do live up to your reputation
Kim Hong Do laughs at the praise
Kim Hong Do: If I knew you would have give me such praises I will have prepare some gifts for you as a token. What had happen that Chusan Chona had summoned me back to the capital all of a sudden?
Pil Chul: Because of this
Pil Chul shows Shin Yun Bok’s drawing
Pil Chul: A few days ago, the apprentice when went to an outdoor excursion to paint from life, one of the apprentices produces this works. I will like to ask for you help who drew this, that is why.
Kim Hong Do looks at the drawing, and then takes it to study in forensically
Pil chul: What do you see?
Kim Hong Do: This….Is this really produce out from an apprentice? This little brat, really have some gift, an exceptionally have a very good eye for details
Pil Chul: What?
Kim Hong Do: In the drawing there is not only a lady as a theme, there is the fence, the swaying of the willow tree, orchestrated in a single moment. As she is turns slightly away from the drawing, it gives a mysterious feel to it. Her contours of her body, isn’t it….
Pil Chul slams his hand on the table to stop Kim Hong Do for explaining further
Pil Chul: What rubbish are you saying? Seeing a woman standing under a withered tree, do you understand what is it? Also what is the woman holding in her hand? It is a straw hat. It is after an illicit affair, a straw hat that the man left behind. The woman is now just rekindled on happenings that just happened. The lover. This drawing is definite a “Chun Hwa” (phonographic) drawing.
Kim Hong Do: A Chun Hwa….Chun hwa, so you want me to find out who drew this painting, then after…
Pil Chul: In Dohwaseo we can’t allow this kind of obscene people that create trouble to remain here. You should know better
Kim Hong Do: That….it have been a while. I can’t recall any longer
Pil Chul: Then what you meant is that do you want the body of yours to bleed before you can remember?
Kim Hong Do looks at Pil Chul & just gave a huff
Kim Hong Do: Do you want to use the punishment crushing of the hand, isn’t it? (Punishment of crushing the hand with a rock)
Pil Chul: This is Dohwaseo. A piece of paper can determine the fate of your hands & leg & even your head whether you can leave it intact. You should know of this well
Kim Hong Do: You are still the same self
Pil chul: If you are not willing, that fine
Pil Chul takes back the painting
Pil Chul: Then I just need to write a letter to sent you back
Kim Hong Do gave thought as Pil Chul prepares ink to write the letter. Kim Hong Do then cover the ink box to stop Pil Chul from lifting his brush
Kim Hong Do: How many days?
Pil Chul: 5 days. 5 days until the ritual ceremony ends, you need to find that person

Pil Chul: Tam Won have returned. You all must be cautious that he may want to pock into the matter that happened 10 years
Aristocrat Kim: Yes, we have to be cautious
Pil Chul: We need to have this matter finalised. We need to be done with it. We should forever have this matter put behind us
Aristocrat: yes, we definitely need to find
Cho Pal: This is to give to Wusang Daegam
(Wusang Daegam is the uncle to Queen Jeong Sun)
Wusang: What is this? Come, let us open it & have a look
Pil Chul unfolds the drawing on the floor to reveal the painting
All the flower that present the season is portray in the painting
Wusang: It is the flowers of the 4 season. This, how is it?
Pil Chul: The four season’s flowers are in full blossom. It is not bad. But flowers are slightly…
Wu Sang: Then many great thanks to you
Cho Pal: Flowers of 4 seasons do carrying some meaning to it. These are the flower that blossom during the seasons, however this painting, the blossom hold some mysterious points.
Cho Pal starts to hold the painting upright to view
Guest: The blossom can’t be seen, isn’t it, Pil Chul
Pil Chul: Who doesn’t know of this?
Cho Pal: A petal comes from the blossom. The fragrant of the flowers represent nobility. To have this painting hang in a room can cherish to look at these flowers throughout the 4 seasons of the year as company. So this painting is appropriated for Pil Chul to have it. Please accept it
Wusang: If this is so, then you should accept it
Cho Pal: Thank you
Pil Chul rolls up the painting
Someone come shouting being restraint by others
Someone: Let me go! Cho Pal!…Cho pal! please save my wife. Cho pal! Do you hear me?
As the “someone” being drag away, the people in the room take no heed
Cho Pal: This person is….really, please excuse me for a moment.
That someone gets batter by Cho Pal in a room
Someone: Cho Pal, what are you doing? Did you not forget that we were fighting together in the street market? Please save my wife, save my wife her.
Someone tries to come forwards but was kick back. Someone falls to the ground
Cho Pal: Cho Pal, This person
Someone: Cho Pal! Cho Pal!
Someone is then kicked by Cho Pal’s men
Cho Pal returns to the room where his guests were drinking
Cho Pal: Are you all enjoying yourselves?
Wusang: We will have to wait for Tam Won to find out that the little brat is that drew that Chun hwa. At that time, it will be fine. Before then, how are we to deal with the matter? I will pay my respect to the Minister (Yi Pan)
Pil Chul: Fine, let do it this way
Aristocrat Kim: However, why all of the sudden that boy Tam Won would have return to the Han yang?
Pil Chul whispers
Pil Chul: It is Chusan Chona who summon his return
Aristocrat Kim: Chusan? Personally?
Jeongjo is looking at the painting of the tiger, presented by Kim Hong Do. Kim Hong Do in the audience of Jeongjo
Jeongjo: It looks lifelike even though it is on paper. It looks alive. It is very lively. Being expel to a far to Miu Hyang San, even having the 4 treasures (paper, brush, ink stick & ink stone) of study would not be available. You can be able to bring out such a lifelike tiger back
Kim Hong Do: This period of time I was accompany the tiger, now the tiger is almost like my wife
Jeongjo laugh at Kim Hong Do’s remarks.
Jeongjo: Yes it is, a person that is not married will think of such thoughts. You are still your same self. I wish I can admire your painting every day, I have long awaited for this very moment
Kim Hong Do: It had been so long, you are still fond of new things. Chusan Chona is still very much your old self
Jeongjo: This period of time, without you by my side, I felt very weary & bored. Right! I heard that Dohwaseo had an incident
Kim Hong Do: Yes, Chona. If it lights up the Queen Dowager’s fury, it looks like it wouldn’t be a small matter. If it was Hong Do to handle it, then this definitely may have an easy solution to settle the matter. No matter what apprentice is he, to have Chusan Chona’s attention even before he is a full fledge artist, it would be seen as just that ordinary. It loos like this matter is of great importance
Jeongjo laughs
Jeongjo: It can be seen as that. No matter what, the most important thing is that you have retuned alive. It is really very fortunate that you can returned alive
Queen Jeong Sun’s chambers. Queen Jeong Sun is having tea with 2 Minister. They are Aristocrat Kim & Wusang Daegam
Minister: What has happen?
Queen Jeong Sun: The people are hungry in misery. We need to audit search Dohwaseo & finds out that such a Chun Hwa drawing would have been discovered. As an elder of the Royal Household, how can allow this to pass by
Aristocrat Kim: Is it because that during the Ritual Ceremony, you secretly left the palace without permission. Is that why you did the audit search to have create all this problems
Queen Jeong Sun: Orrabunim
Aristocrat Kim is an elder brother of Queen Jeong Sun
Wusang: Listen to me. Although Chusan Chona had summon Kim Hong Do to return. The incident of Kang So Wan that happened 10 years ago at Dohwaseo, would never be discovered the truth. We need to extra cautious of this
Queen Jeong Sun: This matter…
Wusang: When the apprentice once is being found & caught. I definitely have him silent forever. You should understand the meaning of this.
Queen Jeong Sun: I understand, We Su (Uncle, mother’s brother)
Wusang Daegam is the uncle of Queen Jeong Sun
Cho Pal is cleaning a sword. There is a sidekick obviously a female
Cho Pal: Tam Won had returned
Female: Who is he?
Cho Pal: You go & asked him? Have you read the history book in the library?
Female: Yes.
Cho Pal: He is…the author. It is the most important thing that I most treasure

Shin Yun Bok: How can this be?
Man Bu: You little naïve brats. In the past, he was the former decreased Pil Chul Da Ri’s good friend was punished. Because of the punishment he used a knife & silt his own eyes. There were rumours that attempted to kill Pil Chul
Jang Hyo Won: Actual fact there is also a saying that the person who killed his teacher & friend is Mr Tam Won himself
Shin Yun Bok: Don’t say frightening things to raise alarm
Jang Hyo Won: Why? Do you think is weakness lend its wings to rumours?
Man Bu: Hey! Jang Hyo Won, your fabrication is way out of boundary
Commentator 3: Yes it is, how can this be?
Jang Hyo Won: You are really a bunch of naïve boys. Let’s go, we will be late
Commentator 2: Are we? Let’s go
Jang Hyo Won & commentator 2 walks away
Shin Young Bok: Let getting going too
Shin Yun Bok: Oh!
They both stood up
Shin Yun Bok: You go in first
Shin Young Bok: Why?
Shin Yun Bok: I need to go to the latrine (lavatory)
Shin Young Bok: Then you should go

Shin Yun Bok handing his hand out to asked Kim Hong Do for the reimbursement
Kim Hong Do: On Ho! You, little brat. In broad daylight all of the sudden bring up the matter on 300 nyang. Is the painting torn by just me alone?
Shin Yun Bok: So that is why I bet my own life to draw exactly another piece? 300 nyang, quickly give it to me. Quickly!
Kim Hong Do: To had destroyed Mr Tam Won’s painting works, you should at least compensate to Mr Tam Won himself?
Shin Yun Bok: Mr Tam Won, that matter doesn’t concern you. Ah! It looks like you came here to sell this wind screen. Today is an auspicious day, that is the person Mr Tam Won will today be his 1st day coming to our Dohwaseo to teach. Don’t dwell in self pity. Please leave
Kim Hong Do: Is it? Then I should sell this to Mr Tam Won Kim Hong Do himself would be better
Kim Hong Do takes the wind screen in
Shin Yun Bok: Hey
