Io devo confessare che, anche se non ho visto nessun drama con l'attrice protagonista, non mi piace per nulla. Ho visto tante due pubblicità e foto sue e ho letto qualche articolo. Non mi piace proprio il suo viso e la sua espressione, i suoi occhi mi sembrano da "tonta". Mi appare come una bambina cresciuta.
Scusate questa digressione ma proprio questa attrice non incontra i miei gusti estetici.

Altre foto tratte dal set, una clip e un articolo che è molto interessante, perché rivela la grande passione di chi lavora dietro le quinte di questo drama. La produttrice del drama Jang Tae-yoo, che ha studiato arte presso la Seoul National University, ha voluto che tutti i dipinti di Kim Hong-do e di Shin Yun-bok fossero realizzati a mano da valenti mani d'artista, così quattro artisti contemporanei, Lee Jong-mok, Ahn Guk-ju, Bae Ji-hae e Koo Se-jin, hanno avuto l'onore di riprodurre da accurate stampe i capolavori dei due giganti della storia dell'arte coreana in età Joseon. Tra le opere, potremo apprezzare Portrait of a Beauty, Scenery on Dano Day, Lovers under the Moon, Ssireum (Wrestling), Seodang e Washing Place.
Sono rimasta molto colpita da alcune frasi di Ahn Guk-ju, perché dimostrano quanto sia ancora attuale l'interesse per lo stile pittorico di Shin Yun-bok e di come l'estetica ancora non abbia risolto i dubbi sull'identità sessuale del grande artista. Sono d'accordo, il tratto e un certo modo di indagare il vero nella realtà possono denunciare qualcosa circa l'inclinazione sessuale di una persona, ma non è tutto e forse, è niente.
Io sono donna, eppure il mio tratto ha la stessa forza dinamica di quello di un uomo.

Joseon painters Kim Hong-do and Shin Yun-bok produced works of simple beauty.

In contrast to the restrictions of Joseon (1392-1910) society, their detailed sketches are free-spirited and vividly patterned.

Anyone curious about the works and lives of these two painters can look forward to "The Painter of the Wind," an upcoming 20-episode drama on SBS TV which will air Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9:55 p.m. from Sept. 24.

Moon Geun-young, 21, plays Shin and Park Shin-yang, 40, plays her mentor, who later falls in love with her.

Though in real life Shin (1758-early 19th century) and Kim (born in 1745) were both men, the historic drama adds a fictitious twist. Shin is a young lady whose father has died under suspicious circumstances, and she disguises herself as a man to solve the mystery.

She becomes a member of the dohwaseo, a government-based royal painting institute. Women were not allowed to paint during the Joseon Dynasty. With Kim's help, she investigates her father's death.

In the series, Moon wears gat, a traditional cylindrical hat formerly worn by married gentlemen, and dopo, a gentleman's robe.

The historic drama is based on an eponymous novel by Lee Jung-myung. The book about the two painters, published last year, was a best seller.

The drama's 40-second preview was released last Friday, giving viewers a tantalizing glimpse into a set boasting detailed Joseon costumes, fine calligraphy and painstakingly created props.

The show's producer, Jang Tae-yoo, studied arts at Seoul National University, which is partly why he is taking extra care to ensure the accuracy of the paintings by Shin and Kim depicted in the drama.

He hired four contemporary painters - Lee Jong-mok, Ahn Guk-ju, Bae Ji-hae and Koo Se-jin - to create reproductions of the Joseon masterpieces for use in the drama.

Theirs is no small task. Among the paintings they are reproducing are Shin's "Portrait of a Beauty," "Scenery on Dano Day" and "Lovers under the Moon" and Kim's "Ssireum (Wrestling)," "Seodang" and "Washing Place."

Although MBC TV drama "Yi San" once showed snippets of what went on at the dohwaseo, it is this team's eye for detail that really lend The Painter of the Wind an air of authenticity.

Lee, currently a painting professor at Ewha Womans University, is in charge of the team. She took on the same role for the film "Strokes of Fire" (2002), which depicted the life of painter Jang Seung-up.

"It's an honor drawing copies of the great masters," Ahn said. "The more I draw, the more I'm attracted to Shin's works."

The team has been working out of their atelier in Sinchon, northern Seoul.

As the originals belong to galleries and private collections all over the country, they based their work off detailed prints.

"Shin's paintings are so detailed and subtle that it makes me think he was a woman," Ahn said, pointing to a nude painting as an example.

"Shin's nude paintings have details that only women would notice."

Still deeply absorbed in his paintings, Ahn said, "If he wasn't [a woman], Shin must have either been gay or a man who knew women very well."

So far, Lee, Ahn, Bae and Koo have reproduced 80 paintings for the upcoming drama, including sketches and patterns drawn on a traditional folding screen and picture books.

Even the smallest painting has been hand-drawn rather than reprinted.

The four painters also stood in as doubles for certain scenes, although "the entire cast and staff received a lecture on painting using a brush and ink," according to Bae.

"I hope the drama will help many Koreans understand the world of traditional paintings," Bae said.

Molto materiale fotografico anche all'ora di pranzo!
Io amo molto le immagini dei dietro le quinte, perché sottolineano il duro e oscuro lavoro di tante persone che non compaiono, ma che profondono tutta, ma veramento tutta la loro professionalità, affinché gli obiettivi del piano di riprese vengano raggiunti. E un drama storico, non è mai una passeggiata per tutti gli addetti ai lavori.
Poi, ci sono immagini che raccontano un momento, molti momenti di una storia e solleticano la nostra curiosità sui perché e sui per come di quelle determinate sequenze. In questo caso, gli spazi e le emozioni che esse evocano sono per me una voce familiare che non ho mai potuto dimenticare. La voce del mio cuore, l'unico luogo dove posso essere soltanto me stessa, nient'altro che me stessa.

Stasera, ho risolto un piccolo mistero.
Da pochi giorni, la SBS aveva modificato il link per accedere al sito di Painter of the Wind e nella stringa dell'URL compariva una parola per me del tutto ignota e, apparentemente, non legata al titolo del drama, Hwawon. La spiegazione parte dal titolo stesso del drama Painter of the Wind che è lo stesso del romanzo di Lee Jung-Myung. Ebbene, Hwawon era il significante per il significato pittore nel corso della dinastia Chosun, anche se ciò significa giardino fiorito attualmente, ma hanno le lettere cinesi differenti come il senso, naturalmente.
Ora, nella mia mente si è aperta una porta.
Per questa ragione, amo profondamente le parole.
Un grazie sincero a Logicalsong del Soompi per la spiegazione.

About the title, I guess there was a misunderstanding.

The title of the novel and the drama is same. It's "Painter of the wind"
Hwawon is the word for painter in Chosun dynasty, although it means flower garden now. But they have different Chinese letters and measning of course.

I guess that's why ppl got mistaken about the title.

The drama is about two most famous painters throught Chosun dynasty, so the title should be "Painter of the wind" as it really is.

Come promesso.
Sotto spoiler alcuni dei momenti della press conference e anche altre foto ufficiali dal set.
Moon Geun Young era molto radiosa, anche se in evidente difficoltà con un vestito non adatto a lei (sembrava che le dovesse cadere sul pavimento da un minuto all'altro!), mentre Park Shin Yang era affabile e sorridente come sempre. Spero che qualche persona molto gentile sul Soompi riesca a tradurre anche qualche articolo, perché mi piacerebbe molto sentire le dichiarazioni dei protagonisti e chissà, qualche anticipazione sulla trama.
Ringrazio sentitamente mzpakipot e malenn del Soompi per tutte le immagini.

Sono molto felice, perché ho dato una breve scorsa al Soompi ed ho letto solo parole egregie per il debutto di Painter Of The Wind.
La prima puntata è stata rilasciata pochi minuti fa sul clubbox dei WITH S2 ed è disponibile anche sul clubbox codndwh/kjq6m1, segnalato da cute girl del Soompi.

It’s hard to start when there’s nothing on that canvas. It’s hard for a writer, no matter if it’s a pro we’re dealing with or not, imagine for a painter. Hell, imagine, for instance, what it would be for a broadcaster. What SBS did in 1991 was exactly that. Competition by then had sort of become a moot issue, since with only two stations worth mentioning (MBC and KBS), and each enjoying various periods of boom and famine, it was only a matter of who would end up enjoying near total domination, it wasn’t a real conflict. But when the third choice arrived, things started to change. SBS bought (literally) the best writers, PDs and actors from the two other major stations, breaking decade-long exclusive contracts. They attracted the biggest stars, simply throwing money at the wall. They slowly but surely got several local broadcasters under their wings, such as Busan’s KNN, Daegu’s TBC, Daejeon’s TJB and Gwangju’s KBC, airing what was then known as just 서울방송 (Seoul Broadcasting System) in some of the biggest markets outside the capital. Signal was still poor in many areas, and along with aggressive “appropriation” techniques, the political slant of the channel was always obvious, with Taeyoung Group holding 30% of the shares at the start. Not exactly the most artistic of starts for Korea’s first private channel, but it worked.

What probably hasn’t worked incredibly well during the last 17 years is creating an image for itself. SBS has been known mostly for its decidedly right-wing slant on the news/current events side, but when it comes to dramas, all you remember is big potboilers throwing a lot of money at the wall hoping it would stick. Think of manhwa adaptations like 아스팔트 사나이 (The Asphalt Man) in 1995, with Lee Byung-Heon, Jung Woo-Sung, Choi Jin-Shil and Lee Young-Ae. Think of 올인 (All In) 8 years later, and the endless list of Korean wave trendy dramas shot overseas and written by people who shouldn’t touch scripts with a ten foot pole. Sad, because if you look at SBS’ first 17 years, there’s actually a few gems you can single out. Two particularly stand out in the 90s, and they both not surprisingly have something to do with history. One was the legendary 모래시계 (The Sandglass), the other the not as famous – but just as good – 1996 sageuk 임꺽정 (Im Kkeok-Jeong). You’ll find plenty (well, relatively) of watchable series between 1991 and today, but these two stand out as the only masterpieces this channel produced in the last 17 years. So much for painting the canvas with something distinctive.

It’s a peculiar problem, because everything the channel does, they’re pigeonholed even before the start. One good recent case would be 왕과 나 (The King and I), which never enjoyed any chance despite being far superior to 이산 (Yi San), and sort of self-imploded under pressure created by competition, internal struggles, bad press, unrealistic expectations from the public and idiotic decisions by its producers, Olive9 on top. It’s no secret SBS is the most “commercial” of all stations in Korea, with really very little space for diversity, or anything escaping from the usual populist canon. Yet, the last two years have started showing some progress, at least on the diversity front. Social satire like 강남엄마 따라잡기 (Gangnam Mom) was something you couldn’t even dream to see on SBS just a few years ago, and despite the fact they periodically shoot themselves in the foot, things like 비천무 (Bichunmoo), 달콤한 나의 도시 (My Sweet Seoul), 사랑해 (I Love U) and last in line 신의 저울 (The Scale of Providence) show not all SBS produces is, well, crap. Problem, of course, is sageuk.

Ever since its founding and 1991’s 유심초 (Yushimcho) by Shin Bong-Seung, the channel has tried and tried to carve its own niche, something a little distanced from KBS’ sober and traditionalist authentic sageuk, and MBC’s grass roots fusion – or anything not dealing with kings, after their historical orgasm in the 80s with 조선왕조500년 (500 Years of Joseon). They could have found their own space if they followed up 1998’s entertaining 홍길동 (Hong Gil-Dong) with the third and final “chapter” in the heroic thieves series which started with Im Kkeok-Jeong, but not too surprisingly they dropped the ball. They did end up making 장길산 (Jang Gil-San) a full six years later, but the momentum was lost already. The station did find amazing success with 2001’s 여인천하 (Ladies of the Palace), but it was just way too loud and over the top to leave any lasting impression. Most of their other efforts in the genre suffered from bad scripts, even worse acting, and laughable production values. Which brings us to the present.

Sageuk as it was known – anyone who started watching the genre from 대장금 (Dae Jang Geum), Koreans or foreigners as they may be, doesn’t really realize what a proper historical drama is – remains nothing more than a dying genre, replaced by fusion sageuk, that is an excuse to dress up trendy dramas with pretty clothes, in most cases. The idea at the origin of this “fusion” concept was to mix two completely different elements, and while retaining their distinctive uniqueness coming up with a sum in which each completed the other. For instance, Lee Byung-Hoon was able to talk about certain historical figures without the need to bother with kings in 허준 (Hur Joon) and 상도 (Sang Do). The two shows focused heavily on the two’s professions (physician, merchant), added some historical details, and packaged everything into an easy to follow story. It was a little different from the sageuk people were used to see, but not enough to alienate them. On the other hand, it was different enough that those who always neglected the genre (younger viewers) finally started paying attention. That fine balance between old and new, history and new dramatic sensibilities is what made fusion sageuk interesting. But today that balance is lost.

To explain why, one would need a decent historical background, something today’s younger viewers seem to lack in droves, and one of the reasons producers get away with it (those complaining are always grumpy old bastards, or… ahem, slightly younger. Grumpy bastards, that is). Not 주몽 (Jumong) nor 황진이 (Hwang Jin-Yi), not even supposedly “traditional” sageuk like 대조영 (Dae Jo-Young) have much to do with history, which is why any new sageuk appearing inside production lists always brings veteran fans the good old cold sweats: how badly are they going to screw it up this time? 일지매 (Iljimae) was enough already, did we need to bother sacred cows like Shin Yoon-Bok and Kim Hong-Do as well? Apparently yes. Watching the first two episodes of SBS’ latest tentative at finally making one decent fusion sageuk, 바람의 화원 (Painter of the Wind), one suddenly understands why Lee Byung-Hoon was so obsessed with the subject, enough that he ended up half-assing it on Yi San. This thing… good grace. It’s beautiful.

When I say that, I just don’t mean that Moon Chae-Won is kind of hot (though spending a few hours in acting school wouldn’t hurt), the art design is top notch, and that I love the way painting is visualized on the screen as if it was the painter’s imagination. No, I mean the entire production, from music to CG, from cinematography to the costumes, from the research behind all the paintings beyond superficial notions (several experts on the matter offered their insight during the making of the show, and the paintings are just stunning), and the little touches in the dialogue and characterization showing newcomer Lee Eun-Young didn’t just study a couple of books to write this, but that she had knowledge and historical consciousness of her own. You can smell the difference between this and, say, Yi San looking at the way the relationship between King Jeongjo and Queen Mother Jeongsun is handled. In the former, it was a gloriously idiotic mess of cliches and superficiality, whereas here, even if they’ve been on a total of 10 minutes out of two entire episodes (total of around two hours and a half), you can see that everything feels right. That there’s thinly veiled tension between Jeongjo and Byeokpa stalwart Queen Mother Jeongsun, the woman many think was one of the major culprits responsible for Crown Prince Sado’s (Jeongjo’s father) tragic death. This is the same relationship masterfully crafted by last year’s 한성별곡-正 (Conspiracy in the Court), and since as the drama goes on the focus will exactly go back to the Prince Sado accident, one can’t help but be excited about this.

No, it’s just the whole thing that’s exciting. The idea from the drama comes from Lee Jung-Myeong’s interesting novel of the same name, which made an interesting point, or at least used a very palatable possibility to make good drama: Danwon Kim Hong-Do and Hyewon Shin Yoon-Book were two of the very best painters Joseon had seen, and ironically lived during the same period, and frequented the Dohwaseo (Royal Bureau of Painting) at the same time. There were quite a few paintings from the two with almost suspiciously similar subjects. Yet, strange enough, you’ll be drowning with material about Danwon if you look for it, whereas Hyewon’s life is clouded in mystery. Kim ended up winning Jeongjo’s trust (one of the three kings he served) along with some important positions in the court, whereas Shin Yoon-Bok was expelled from the Dohwaseo, and spent his life dealing with very pungent satire about the people around him. It was like an enfant terrible, too provocative, innovative, creative for the era he was living in. Enough to start wondering, what if it wasn’t just his painting style to blame? What if he was in truth a woman, trying to disguise herself as a man among the strict Neo-Confucian creed which colored Joseon’s society for centuries? A wild conjecture at best, but not entirely worthless, particularly when it comes to drama.

You can imagine where this could be going, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how un-trendy drama like this show feels. It has class, the kind of elegance something like Hwang Jin-Yi could only dream of. It has its silly moments (at times a little too silly for my liking, but in the writer’s favor, they never become useless, as they’re always tied to the main story), but it rarely breaks the flow, and when it gets going it feels… finally, like a real drama, not Teletubbies with hanboks prancing around so that simpletons can tell Momma they’ve finally watched a sageuk. There’s complexity you can’t just solve by rewatching the show, it almost forces you to go back to the history books or documentaries to refresh your memory. For instance, the drama takes one of Shin’s most famous paintings, 기다림 (Wait), which had nothing to do with Queen Mother Jeongsun (never mentioned in the original novel), and attaches palace intrigue to it, involving all the major characters around a single point. It’s very simple, but brilliantly handled. And if writer Lee, who comes from Chungmuro but is impressive as a sageuk newcomer, keeps up with the intricate synopsis (quite meaty, but they always are. On paper) and can actually connect all the dots within the next 18 episodes, this is truly going to turn into an interesting experience.

Of course, not everything is perfect. The reason why Park Shin-Yang has said to the press “this isn’t a sageuk” is probably because he’s acting as if this wasn’t one. Watch 쩐의 전쟁 (War of Money) or this, it’s the same tone and delivery, same facial expression, same gestures and posture. Park does have his own, unique charm, but frankly when he has to carry the drama on his shoulders things become a little risky. Also, sometimes the beautiful music tends to get a little too showy for its own good (I’m watching a drama, not a Glenn Gould concert. A’ight?). Also please, please, let’s keep characters whose sole purpose is to be funny away from anything important, since they’re not. Still, Bae Soo-Bin as King Jeongjo doesn’t disappoint, and Im Ji-Eun, returning to sageuk for the first time since 2003’s 어사 박문수 (Royal Emissary Park Moon-Soo), is just wonderful as Queen Mother Jeongsun. But the real gem is Moon Geun-Young. This is not her first sageuk, as she played the younger version of Lee Mi-Yeon in Jung Ha-Yeon’s 2001 명성황후 (The Last Empress)—better than Lee Mi-Yeon, at that – but she’s just magnificent here, the best acting of her career so far. If you watched this without knowing who she was, or going in without any background knowledge, you’d seriously have a hard time realizing it’s actually a woman playing this character. Her tomboy-like energy and panache is a joy to watch, and perhaps the reason, despite the few warts which should surely pop along the way, this might actually become one of the few sageuk worthy of their name this year....

The current drama landscape: An overview

It seems we suddenly have a ton of new dramas out, and I was starting to feel a bit lost. So here’s a brief overview of the dramas currently airing, some of which I’m following regularly and some that I haven’t committed to sticking with yet.

For the series I plan to keep watching, I’ll probably follow up with more in-depth posts, but for now I’m taking a general, overall look at the current lineup. (The two dramas pictured above, Kingdom of Wind and The Painter of Wind, are probably the two best series airing currently, but for different reasons.)

The Painter of Wind (SBS)

On the other hand, The Painter of Wind shows off an entirely different artistic sensibility in its delicacy. While Kingdom of the Wind is dark, Painter is picturesque, and finds itself in its details — the close shots of the moving paintbrush, the lingering look in a character’s eyes. It also boasts a lovely background score and a director who uses it to its best effect.

I wouldn’t be too quick to call Moon Geun-young revelatory in her performance as a woman masquerading as a man in order to receive art training — not yet — but I think we can expect good things from her as this series progresses. Like Yoon Eun-hye before her, she is almost too pretty to pass off as male, but actually does a credible job with mannerisms, line delivery, and deepened voice (especially considering how much more high-pitched her normal speaking voice is).

The thing that sets The Painter of Wind apart from most sageuks is that it doesn’t (appear to) have a political focus. While the court and politics are featured, the main plot of Painter isn’t dictated by power (comma, the acquisition of). It’s a character and relationship study.

Based on the first two episodes, it looks like the series is going to start off lighthearted — Episode 1 was surprisingly upbeat and funnier than I’d expected. I am guessing the series will progress into more emotionally fraught territory as we delve into these characters. Park Shin-yang lays out the development of the relationship that will flower between master and student in the opening voiceover, saying, “She was my student… my teacher… my friend… and my beloved.”

Verdict: Same deal as Kingdom. I plan to watch, but won’t be recapping. But if you feel up to the task, I’d be happy to give someone else a stab at it.

I admit that I wasn’t really expecting much from Painter of the Wind, mostly because I’m not exactly a fan of either the PD or Park Shin Yang. But it turned out to be a lovely, enchanting surprise, and I am happier than I can say. Ahhh, sageuk. You make the cockles of my heart go all warm and gooey.

Especially when it’s a sageuk that plays around with the notion of gender! Oh, the possibilities…

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The year is 1777, in the first year of King Jeong-jo’s reign. Jeong-jo was the subject of many other sageuk in the past, notably the Lee Seo Jin hit Yi San, and 2007’s beautiful masterpiece, Conspiracy in the Court. So some of you should be familiar with his life story by now, but I’ll repeat some things, just in case, as it’s important to note such historical facts (if history can ever really be “factual”!) for this particular drama.

Jeong-jo became king under heartbreaking conditions - his father, Prince Sado, was executed by King Yeong-jo, Jeong-jo’s grandfather, thanks to some deep misunderstandings and Sado’s unstable mental state. And er, let’s just say that he and his stepmother, Queen Mother Jeong-soon (King Yeong-jo’s second wife) did not exactly get along. In fact, they were political enemies. (The best enemies are always the people who are related to you, I say.) And this drama is already laying out their relationship beautifully. Huzzah!

Two of Korea’s greatest painters lived and worked during this period. And they undoubtedly knew each other, as they were both at the Dohwaseo (the Royal Bureau of Painting) at the same time. They also had very similar subjects for some paintings, such as the ones with more *ahem* “mature content” (you’re going to google them, aren’t you?). They are, of course, this drama’s protagonists: Danwon Kim Hong-do, played by Park Shin Yang, and Hyewon Shin Yoon-bok, played by Moon Geun Young.

Painter of the Wind starts deviating from history a bit (or a lot?) in its handling of Moon Geun Young’s character. Shin Yoon-bok was a man, but in this drama, which is based on the novel by Lee Jung Myeong, we take the “What if Shin Yoon-bok was actually a woman pretending to be a man?” approach. Which is an interesting stance to take, considering how very fond Shin Yoon-bok was of painting women. It also makes for lots of crossdressing opportunities, but also makes an interesting statement, in terms of both feminism and historical commentary.

So, now that we’ve got all that out of the way…

EPISODE 1 RECAP

Episode one starts out with a hint of what’s to come in future: In an absolutely gorgeous opening sequence, Park Shin Yang’s character, Hong-do, heads up to a kind of shack on a mountain, and in voiceover, he tells us:

“I am now going to tell you about one person.
Right now…I am happy, yet I am suffering.
I am happy that I remember him…And I am suffering because I am going to lose him.
He was my student…my teacher…my friend…and my lover.”

As he narrates, we get glimpses of Yoon-bok painting in the shack. One minute she’s dressed in men’s clothes, and the next, she’s dressed as a woman - so right from the get-go, we’re informed that she’s a woman who’s cross-dressing as a man. This show don’t hedge around no bushes, yo!

Hong-do enters to an empty shack, however, and there, faced with the painting of a woman (Shin Yoon-bok’s ultra-famous “Beauty”), he cries his little heart out. Obviously, something really terrible has happened. I can’t wait to find out what! (Although I have a hunch.)

Aaaaaand…We’re off! Leaving the foreshadow-y opening sequence behind, right away we’re introduced to the art students, who are passing their time in what is clearly a very productive way (…not), by having a kind of competition in which two people (Yoon Bok, and her obvious (sleazy) rival, Jang Hyo-won, the dude played by Park Jin Woo) drag their giant brushes dipped in ink across paper. The one whose ink lasts the longest wins. Yoon-bok is the victor, naturally.

And then the writer and PD get to add in what we’ve all been waiting for: the obligatory breast-binding scene! Seriously, girl-dressing-as-guy books/comics/dramas/films are waaaaaay too fond of this scene. It’s my theory that it’s really just a chance to add in some fanservice for those who are fond of the ladies, since the actress can’t exactly show a heck of a lot of shoulder or chest skin if she’s dressing as a man. And yet they all want to see a little something-something anyway. Peeeeeervs. (Kidding!)

We move on to the outdoor class the students are having, which is briefly interrupted by a small group of kisaeng who are passing by, and making come-hither looks at the openly drooling boys. We even get a bit of a lesbian moment here, as one of the kisaeng and Yoon-bok lock gazes, and a strange, chemistry-filled connection becomes evident. I’m guessing that Yoon-bok’s just interested from an artistic standpoint, but whatevs. This makes me happy.

Meanwhile, a high-class woman meets secretly with a mysterious (and probably tall and handsome, too) man. The two are obviously ex-lovers who haven’t seen each other in years, but whose passion for each other has certainly not faded. As evidenced by the strategic slow-motion dropping of his hat on the floor. Ooooh.

The students all go off to draw whatever they want, as this is a kind of free drawing day, and they have to hand in their paintings by sunset. One of the students, Young-bok, who appears to be Yoon-bok’s adoptive brother, and the teacher’s son, follows her, and sweetly tries to give her tips on what to draw, etc. Yoon-bok is annoyed by his overprotectiveness, however, and sends him on his way.

She happens to sit atop a pile of logs, and also happens to glance over into the courtyard of the house beyond the wall she’s sitting beside. There, she sees the woman we met before, thoughtfully walking around, and holding the straw hat behind her back. Inspired, Yoon-bok whips out her drawing pad, and sketches the woman as she stands by the tree - producing another famous Shin Yoon-bok painting, titled “Wait”.

Unfortunately, the woman notices her, and orders her lackeys to chase after her. We get the requisite chase scene through the market, and Yoon-bok winds up hiding in a fabric shop, where she encounters, quite by chance, the kisaeng she’d shared the lesbian moment with before.

And now the lesbianness (is that a word?) grows even more obvious, as the kisaeng and Yoon-bok exchange a very flirty conversation in which Yoon-bok compares the two of them to a flower (that being the kisaeng) and a butterfly (that being Yoon-bok). Then those lackeys who were chasing Yoon-bok earlier run by, and Yoon-bok hides again, her cool flirtines shattered. The kisaeng, being a bit of a Sassy Sally, pretends to call the lackeys over, and Yoon-bok falls for her trick. Embarrassed and annoyed, she says “As you’re so full of thorns, you’re not a flower, but poison!” and stalks off. But the kisaeng watches her go, and I’m thinking she’s warm for this pretty boy’s form. Ooh la la.

King Jeong-jo is being coronated in a fancy pantsy ceremony. The only thing I really took away from this scene is this thought: “Daaaaaamn, Bae Soo Bin is kinda hot.”

And then! The straw hat-holding woman we saw before? Turns out she’s Queen Mother Jeong-soon! Oooh, scandalous. She’s desperate to find that painting of her that Yoon-bok made, afraid that Yoon-bok had drawn something that would rat her out. Because, of course, it ain’t exactly “proper” for a queen mother to be consorting with a man in such a manner.

Once she finds out that the “mysterious artist” is from the Dohwaseo, she orders all the drawings that the students had drawn that day to be brought to her. She sorts through them one by one, until she finds Yoon-bok’s work…And she’s furious. She demands that the artist be found immediately. (The students don’t write their names on drawings they made during free drawing period, so they have no way of knowing whose it is.)

All the higher-ups of the Dohwaseo get together for an emergency meeting, and condemn the painting as being scandalous and pornographic (they dislike the sexual hints they see in it, as it’s a drawing of a woman holding a man’s hat, etc). Shin Han-pyung, Yoon-bok and Young-bok’s father and teacher, recognizes the drawing as being from his class, and is ordered to find out who the culprit is.

So the students all get punished with some literal butt-whooping as they try to find out who it was. Yoon-bok looks guilty, and seems on the verge of telling the teacher it was her - but he purposefully ignores her, and orders all of them to come to his room one by one for interrogation.

Thus follows a light and comedic interrogation scene (a little too light and comedic for my tastes, but whatever). When it’s Yoon-bok’s turn, it seems as though she’s going to confess again, but as soon as she mentions the drawing, her father asks her if she has any idea who the culprit might be. He goes on to say that this is a very serious matter, and that the queen mother herself is involved. This frightens Yoon-bok enough to make her clam up, and thus the interrogations end with them unable to find the artist.

That night, Yoon-bok asks Young-bok if it’s really so wrong to make a painting of a woman - after all, every time a woman even just passes by on the street, men start drooling openly. She comments on the hypocrisy of acting that way, and yet being forbidden to add those parts of life into painting. Yoon-bok then asks Young-bok if he likes any woman himself, and his over-exaggerated reaction (”What?! NO!”) makes it obvious that yes, indeed, he has a crush. And that crush is on…Yoon-bok! Seriously. I am too delighted for words.

The Dohwaseo officials have another meeting, and lament the fact that they haven’t been able to find Mr. Culprit. Then one of them suggests that maybe the currently-banished Kim Hong-do might be able to ferret him out. A couple of them go into an uproar, insisting that Kim Hong-do can never be called back from his banishment. I don’t know what he did wrong, but it seems he was pretty naughty, because Jang Byeok-soo, the grumpy man in charge of the Dohwaseo, and Yoon-bok’s dad in particular, seem strongly opposed to his return. Nevertheless, the official in charge declares that all their necks are on the line, and that he’s going to make sure Hong-do gets called back, no matter what they say.

King Jeong-jo discovers what the queen mother’s been up to with the Dohwaseo, and he asks her why she’s been making all these orders. She replies that she was shocked to see such an erotic painting coming out of the Royal Bureau of Painting, and that the culprit must be found and punished. I don’t think Jeong-jo is swallowing any of her B.S., but he plays along, and agrees with her. He adds that he’ll even help her, and informs her that he’s releasing the banishment on Danwon Kim Hong-do, and that he’s sure that, if anyone can find the culprit, it’s him. Jeong-soon is not pleased, but she’s torn by her sense of urgency in finding the one who made that painting, and gives in by silent consent. King Jeong-jo: 1, Queen Mother Jeong-soon: 0.

Aaaaand, we’re introduced to Hong-do! He’s decked out in his best Hobo in Greenery outfit, and, like the crazy wildlife man he is, is sneaking up on a tiger in order to draw it. He’s wary of the tiger at first, but he eventually gets so into his drawing that he doesn’t notice when the tiger is about two feet away from his face…and staring right down at him.

The tense moment is broken when he drops his chalk, and the chase begins! I don’t know how on earth he’s managing to outrun a tiger, when the animal could clearly catch up with him in two pounces, but hey, those stalks of grass on his head are pretty damn ridiculous, too. The tiger chases him all the way to a waterfall, and after pausing for a moment, Hong-do leaps off the cliff, and into the waters below.

In the water, he seems to lose consciousness for a second, and we get an image of a woman (we don’t see her face), and two hands reaching out to each other…And then, miraculously, he’s saved, by a vine that a government official tosses down to him. When they got there, and how they expected him to grab it, I do not know. There are a lot of things about this introductory scene that I don’t understand. But I guess we’re just supposed to go along with it? Bah! Humbug.

Anyway, the officials read out a royal declaration to him, ordering him to return to the capital.

So he does. He and the officials separate in the marketplace, as they want to get a bite to eat, and he needs a new pair of glasses (he lost his other pair in his impossible leap off the cliff). He wanders around, and happens upon a painting that he himself made (”Drunken Student Under the Pine Tree”). He reaches out to look at it more closely - only to find that Yoon-bok wants to look at the painting, too. The two of them engage in a bit of a tug-’o-war, both physically and verbally, but of course, in the end…The painting rips in half. Tsk tsk. What a mature first meeting.

Turns out that the painting was worth 300 yang - which shocks them both - and Yoon-bok offers the enraged vendor to paint an exact duplicate in its place. So she gets to work, and Hong-do looks on, offering some advice and continually annoying her with what she sees as unnecessary pestering. Impatient to get him off her back, she even claims that she knows Kim Hong-do herself, and that’s why she knows what his drawing style’s like. Hong-do is amused by her lie. How embarrassing for Yoon-bok.

Hong-do goes to see Byeok-soo, and after exchanging some fake pleasantries, he learns what his mission is: To find the student responsible for the painting. Looking at it, Hong-do comments that the artist is quite talented, enough that it’s hard to believe it was made by a mere student. Byeok-soo, ever the tightass, is insulted, and insists that it’s an erotic painting, since the woman is holding a man’s hat, and the symbolism of the tree, yadda yadda shut up. Hong-do finds his words to be ridiculous, but he lets it go, and asks what will happen to the student once he’s found. It turns out that he’ll have his hand cut off as punishment. Ouch. This makes Hong-do uncomfortable enough that he doesn’t seem to want to take part, but with the threat of being banished again, he grabs the chance and asks how much time he has. Five days.

Some noblemen, including Byeok-soo - clearly the antagonists - have a get-together, during which they worry about Hong-do’s return. All order must be kept in the Dohwaseo! Etc, etc. Suddenly, some peasant guy comes around, calling the host, Kim Jo-nyon, “Jo-pal” and begging for someone’s life to be saved - Soo-jung? No idea who that is. Jo-nyon, who appears to be a very clever (and eeeeeevil) businessman, gets up and deals with the peasant properly, in the form of a merciless beating. It looks like he has a less-than-noble past? And he even has a boyish female sidekick! Interesting. So there’s more than one cross-dresser in this show? Sweeeet.

The students learn that they’re going to receive lessons from the great Danwon Kim Hong-do himself, and they discuss rumours, like the one where he stabbed himself after a friend of his was stabbed to death, or the one where he killed the friend himself. Most of the students dismiss the rumours as hogwash, however.

And then Yoon-bok and Hong-do actually run into each other at the school. Yoon-bok immediately insists that he pay the 300 yang, but Hong-do refuses. Yoon-bok then tells him to leave, thinking that Hong-do’s here to sell a screen to someone, but Hong-do simply makes a taken-aback Yoon-bok carry the screen for him. It’s kind of adorable. As they walk along, they encounter a group of painters, who recognize Hong-do for who he is. Yoon-bok’s shocked, of course, and she slips on the stairs, falling. Hong-do catches her just in time, and then stops the screen, that was tipping over, from falling, too. End episode.

ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS

This is just a really gorgeous and complex show, with lovely music, beautiful visuals, and a breathtaking elegance. Add some exciting political intrigue into that, along with some interesting historical and social commentary, and I’m dancing like it’s 1999.

Plus, there are some real gems in the acting department. True, some of the side characters are annoyingly comedic, but at least their scenes have actual weight in the storyline. And Park Shin Yang doesn’t seem to suit sageuk, especially since he’s really not acting like he’s in a sageuk at all (and dude, what’s with the glasses?). He’s certainly not as bad as Eric was in The Strongest Chil Woo, but he’s not brilliant, either. His character ought to be really fascinating, what with his interesting mix of contradictions and lightheartedness/OMGgenius, but I’m just not feeling it right now. It’s a bit worrying, since he is a major character and all.

Still, I’m really excited to see how Bae Soo Bin and Im Ji Eun will continue to develop their characters, ’cause they’re just two really kickass actors. And have I mentioned Moon Geun Young? Seriously, she’s absolutely wonderful. She gets that whole androgynous vibe down pat, and she manages to be endearingly boyish and spunky without going overboard. She also maintains a perfectly subtle atmosphere of cuteness and youth, which isn’t easy to do. I’m thinking this is going to be the turning point in her recently lagging career. Watch out, Korea, ’cause your little sister is all grown up!

Painter of the Wind - Summary 1


This is my 1st attempted to do a sageuk drama. Using all the historical dramas I have seen as a base & the closes to the recent finished drama “Yi San” This drama is of that era, what was to be known as the Renaissance period of Joseon Dynasty? The arts were very much developed during this era. Seong Seon Yeon who later became Royal Consort Eui Bin was depicted as a 1st female painter in the Royal Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo) who advanced her painting career then only enter the palace at the aged of 29, which is a bit advance in age to be a Consort of the palace. Well that is another story. Although history can be dull but with the romanticised of these saeguk, it gives you some historical facts to it. I am not a historian bluff, but a moderate fan of the “wuxia” novels mainly the ones from Louis Cha & an avid fan of the NHK Taiga drama since 2002.

Background

The year is 1766. Joseon Dynasty Royal Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo). Kang Soo Wan wanted to present “Saesun” (Crown Grandson, later Jeongjo), a portrait of his father the disgrace Crown Prince Sado. He secretly commission Royal Bureau of painting (Dohwaseo) artist Seo Jing to do the portrait. In the midst, he met his death. Investigation to the death of the Royal Bureau artist & his wife who was mysteriously brutally murder led to nowhere. Seo Jing’s daughter is missing without a trace

Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo) artist Kim Hong Do finds out about his good friend’s brutal death & tries to look for traces to his friend’s death but to no vain. However, he only managed to have found a portrait painting without a drawn face.

10 years later, Kim Hong Do returns to head the Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo) & to teach the apprentices. He wishes that every year he would meet some talents with potentials. This year have prove disappointing as the talents he meets are just average. However there is one that catches his attention….

Shin Yun Bok is a talented painter who disguised herself as a boy to search her father’s murderer & meets Kim Hong Do, a master painter who guides her into being a great painter. Kim Hong Do is the man who teaches Shin Yun Bok how to paint & they develop a strong friendship as mentor & disciple

Opening scene

Kim Hong Do walks up the hill as a narrator to the story. There are inter cut scenes of Shin Yun Bok drawing (look like a self portrait), she is seen wearing in male clothes & female clothes hence her cross dressing. Kim Hong Do goes to an abandon house. As he opens the door, Shin Yun Bok looks up. He step in & enter the house, empty. Obviously it is seen that Shin Yun Bok & Kim Hong Do are in different time frame. In the empty house left behind Shin Yun Bok’s self portrait of herself in a hanbok mounted on a frame. Kim Hong Do touched it gingerly & cries for the lost.

Kim Hong Do: I will like to start to tell a story now about a person, my feelings are indeed of glad with joy & pain with sadness. If I think of her, I will feel glad with joy, however if I were to have lost her, I will be ridden with pain of sadness. She is already am my student, my teacher, my friend & also my love

Episode 1 – The journey paint from life

Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo), the year 1777 the 1st year of Jeongjo reigns.

(This is also in the reign of Qing Dynasty Emperor Qian long (1711-1799), Qian long is a major patron of the art & he himself a great scholar in Arts & Literature. Obviously culture exchanges flourish during this period)

Copper coins are place on the 2 pallette dish (looks like a cereal bowl) each with tainted paint of red & blue. Obviously placing bets

Commentator 1: What are you doing? Yes is yes. No is no. Is it blue or red? Aigoo!

Man Bu: Come, it had been 3 years that we have yet had a competition to compete.

The prize is an ink stone & a brush. Man Bu is one of the oldest apprentice artist who have been in Dohwaseo for 10 years looks more like a sport’s commentator.

(There are the 4 treasure of the study & painting, the ink stone, brush, paper & the ink stick. There are others auxiliary as well, pen (brush) holder, brush pot or holder, ink box, paper weights, seal & seal box. These are of course was being introduced extensively in the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. I personally have a set but there are more a decorative items on my cupboard than anything. I can do some paint brush calligraphy but being a left handed it have some restrictions. My teacher said I don’t have the patience too, hence it is in storage. I know how hard is it to control that brush with the amounts of ink that you need set it on paper. The control of the ink’s input is control by the wrist & the strength. It is almost that you need to have the picture or calligraphy in your mind before setting of to put in paper. Once the brush touches the paper, there is no room for mistakes)

Man Bu: Presenting the blue “must win”, Jang Hyo Won. Presenting the red, Royal Bureau of painting “odd ball” Shin Yun Bok. Look & See! Both parties have adjusted their intake of the inks in their brush. Look! These two concentrated competitor’s eyes are not of the ordinary.

(Queen Dowager Jeong Sun of the Kim clan married the old Yeongjo at 18. Poor girl was “sold” by her clan for power. She was even younger that her daughter in law (Queen Heongyeong, mother of Jeongjo. Her title “Queen” was give posthumously later by King Gojong) by 10 years. But she managed to reel & wield in the power that her clan craved for to control the palace during Yeongjo’s reign. During Jeongjo it was managed to suppress down but only until his death (as we had seen in Yi San). His poor son Sunjo was very much a puppet King as Queen Jeong Sun became Regent later her clansman for the young King Sunjo. Sunjo’s son Royal Prince Successor tried to break the control but didn’t live long to pull it off. So much for history lesson)

As the tiger comes closes & showed that he was hungry smacks its tongue as he sees a potential meal in front of him. As the tiger walks closes & start to prance for Kim Hong Do. Kim Hong Do makes his escape by jumping of the water fall ravine into the water. He enters the deep waters below, near drowning, he dreams of a lady in a hanbok as she turns then reaching her hand as he tries to hold her hand, eventually managed to hold on to a stick in which he was pull out from the water where Kim Hong Do trying to catch some air
