Taking a gamble with Tazza
August 11th, 2008 // by javabeans

image

New stills are out for upcoming gambling drama Tazza, featuring its main cast: Han Ye-seul (above), Kim Min-joon (below left), and Jang Hyuk, getting into trouble as always (below center and right).

The stills were taken from a shoot for the title sequence at the drama’s gambling-den set, which is located in Kyunggi-do. A rep from production company Olive Nine stated that the lead actors showcased newly learned gambling skills in their aim to come off as genuine high-rollers: “In particular, Jang Hyuk and Kim Min-joon took on their intense action scenes themselves without using doubles, and even earned applause from the crew.”

Tazza is based on a manhwa by Heo Young-man, which also provided the basis for the 2006 film of the same name starring Kim Hye-soo, although producers point out that the drama will diverge from the movie version, adding several new characters into the mix.

The series will take SBS’s Monday-Tuesday slot currently occupied by Gourmet starting September 8. I can’t say I’m too thrilled about the drama, but I’ll admit it sure looks pretty.

Via My Daily

‘First Wives Club’ Son Hyeon Joo, Transformation in ‘Tazza’!

image

Son Hyeon Joo, who gained popularity as Gil Eok in SBS ‘First Wives Club’, transforms himself through ‘Tazza’.

In SBS ‘Tazza’ he plays Go Kwang Yeol who is always around in gambling places be it winning or losing.

Go Kwang Yeol is a naturally a good character though highly exaggerated.

When he meets Goni accidentally, he realizes Goni is a true Tazza and joins Goni's team. He helps Goni through acting on exactly what Goni plans.

The representative of Olive Nine said “Son Hyeon Joo ssi is someone that can bring in and inspire lightness as well as intensity into the character. Until now Son Hyeon Joo ssi always brings different acting in all the different dramas (he’s been in). Viewers can look forward to his performance here.”

‘Tazza’ will follow SBS ‘Gourmet’ and will broadcast its first episode on September 8.

o-cha, thanks for the translation. You are awesome!
If I dare to correct one... blush.gif

He meets Goni (Jang Hyuk) accidentally and he is the one that introduced Goni to become a real tazza. He made a contract with the head of the organization.

--> When he meets Goni accidentally, he realizes Goni is a true Tazza and joins Goni's team. He helps Goni through acting on exactly what Goni plans.

Actually, I am a bit excited about the acting interaction between Goni (JH) and Go Kwang Yeol (Son Hyun Joo). As all JH fans may agree, how wonderfully he pulls off the interaction with other cast members! Not to mention the interaction with Han Ye Seul and Kim Min Joon, I look forward to seeing his interaction with Son Hyun Joo, and with Lim Hyun Sik with whom JH had acted together in Daemang. wink.gif

Hi cholo and o-cha,

Here is a translation for the part you highlighted. wink.gif
Since I am not familiar with hwatoo jargons like '땡집기' or '밑장빼기', I just interpreted them on my way...haha...
And o-cha, please correct me for the akward expressions too. wink.gif

Son Hyun Joo is heard to put hwatoo cards nearby to practice hwatoo techniques such as ‘picking up the very card for a win (?)’ and ‘hiding bottom card (?)’ as tazzas usually show. He takes a lesson from a professional tazza once a week and practices what he learnt from the expert at any free time available.

To make his role of Go Kwang Pil closest to the one that actor Yoo Hae Jin played as a friend of Goni (Jo Seung Woo) in the movie version of Tazza, he changed his hairdo and clothes to more country-styled ones. Using a flat iron for hairstyling and wearing a colorful suit, he looks quite different from Kil-Eok of ‘First Wives Club’ in such an effort to transform to a new role.

The SBS promotion team says they look forward to seeing if Tazza can hit high ratings just as First Wives Club records 30-plus-percent ratings. Son Hyun Joo has been in good terms with SBS through the roles in SBS dramas for the past two years, and they believe his would-be-good performance in Tazza will help the drama Tazza earn huge popularity.

SPOILER (click to view)
Dopodichè, lei comincia a cambiare.

-soompi forums - Han Yel Seul

CITAZIONE
Han Ye Seul's character, Kwang Sook, based on the news articles:

Kwang Sook and Goni had grown up together at their early years. (She is Goni's first love, actually.) Her happiness didn't last long, though. She was sold for money to the dark world, like a brothel. Going through ordeals, she became cynical about love, men and life, with her soul tortured. Somehow she later became a professional tazza and happened to meet Goni again after years of falling apart. After meeting Goni, she begins to change. Kwang Sook will be in a triangle love relationship with Goni and Young Min.

CITAZIONE
Tazza Jang Hyuk receives private tutoring from a real Tazza

Being cast as the male lead 'Goni' of the SBS drama 'Tazza,' Jang Hyuk's giving an effort to learn tazza's hand juggling from an expert as the first fliming of the drama scheduled around July 20th comes close. Since he is now in filiming the movie 'Penthouse Elephant', he's puting extra time to learn tazza's techniques. According to his aides, he visits a tazza (professional hwatoo gambler) at least once a week and receives a special lesson all day long from morning to night. As the tazza wants to stay anonymous, only Jang Hyuk is allowed to enter the specialist's office to get education. Even his manger has to stay outside during the entire lesson. Since Jang Hyuk does not have much time to practice tazza's techniques, he mostly practices when being transported in his van or at the free time between filming movie scenes.

Besides him, all other cast members spend millions of hours in studying and practicing to learn tazza's techniques. None of them are familiar with Korean card games ('hwatoo'). The drama staff said they need to master the hand techniques to enhance the reality since the camera has limitations in making their awkward handling look professional.

SPOILER (click to view)
Goni (Jang Hyuk)

Nan Sook (Han Ye Seul)

Young Min (Kim Min Joon)

Madame Jung (Kang Sung Yeon)

Character Descriptions:

Goni (played by Jang Hyuk)

"The real game starts from now, and I will throw my final card on behalf of my parents, my friends and my everything. The final card name is revenge."

At the end of his high school days, he met YoungMin who saved him from a hwatoo game where he played with Kwang Cheol, a scumbag and Nan Sook's brother. They spent the most beautiful days together for a while. But things changed. Goni's step father and mother died because of Young Min and Goni was forced to be in jail as someone from the side of A-Gui narked him out for doing something against national security.
In jail, he learned more tazza techniques and built up social networks. After dismissed, he went under the wing of the number one tazza Phyun Gyung Jang (played by Lim Hyun Sik). After practicing and mastering techniques under him with the determination of revenge from his resentment, Goni re-entered the world of gambling. There will be no old Goni until he reaches the goal. He defeated powerful tazzas from the nation in a queue, and finally ends up sitting at the table opposite A-Gui.

Nan Sook (played by Han Ye Seul)

"If I sell my flesh now, I will make no more than hundred thousand dollars.
But if I use it differently, I can make at least half million dollars."

There is a shoddy counter table at a billiard hall. If she sits behind it, she can make it even shine.
She is a girl with mysterious coldness and charm.
She is the first love to Goni and Young Min.
When her brother happened to step in the hwatoo game that A-Gui planned, her life changed. He not only lost the building (probably his family owned and he probably bet on), but also had Nan Sook be sold to Jang Dong Shik (probably a man of AGui).
Liking Nan Sook at first sight, Madam Jung took her with the determination to raise her as a tazza. Nan Sook goes to school during the day, while at night, working and learning hwatoo games at the room-salon and house Madam Jung manages for business.

Young Min (played by Kim Min Joon)

"No one knows when the game ‘Go’es or ‘Stop’s until it is really over."

His eyes are sharp, his feet noiseless, and his fists deliver powerful punches.
He has such a charisma that no one dares to come close to him.
Several gangs often targeted him for recruitment, but he never paid attention to them.
He did not want to give his grandmom any concern who raised him alone..
When he first saw Goni who was able to conquer him with such mild eyes, he became interested in Goni, with unexplainable bewilderment.
He thought he did not need more friends if he had Goni as a friend.
But when he found out the person who died after cutting his wrist by himself was Goni's step father, he couldn't stay next to Goni, ending up turing back at him.

Madame Jung (played by Kang Sung Yeon)

"I will raise a baby tiger with her leg chained."

She looks in her late twenties, but is indeed 35 years old.
She shines in her sizzling glamorous beauty. Even the white teeth slightly shown between her red lipsticks look simply smashing.
She smells like a rose. No one sits with comfort oppsite her at the gambling table. Beauty is her fatal weapon. Through her life experiences, she does not trust men, but rather hates them. That's why she loves the gambling games where she can destroy men to her fullest.

CITAZIONE
other bits of news mentioning Tazza

The article is talking about similarity and differences to adaptations of manhwa (comic) to drama/movie. I guess for Tazza there is a big difference in the portrayal of Goni. In the manhwa Goni is supposed to be this big (kindda pudgy), a little stupid and aloof person when he is gambling. In the drama Jang hyuk as Goni looks so well built in the action scenes.
Also in the manhwa Madam Jung is supposed to be in her 40s but in the drama she is in her 30s. The article also says people are looking forward to the femme fatale image of the drama Madam Jung. The manhwa's Madam Jung is more of a 'worn out' woman and not the sexy woman portrayed in the drama.

SPOILER (click to view)

Revised Character Descriptions:

Goni (played by Jang Hyuk)

"The real game starts from now, and I will throw my cards all my life in the name of revenge."

Goni, a light-and-warm-hearted soul, showed a natural talent for gambling from his childhood.
In his high school days, he tried to shun gambling since his father died because of it. After a short period of happiness in the reunion with his first love Nan Sook, he got into trouble when he joined the professional gambling games for the first time to prepare money for the surgery of his best friend Young Min's grandmother. He lost in the game and realized he can't go back to where he was.
Leaving home and wandering around, he met Pyung Kyung Jang who brought him to a new tazza's world, but soon became washed off by AGui. He ended up being in jail, falsely accused of murder, where he became to know AGui and Young Min were responsible for the death of his father and Dae Ho and the misfortune of NanSook. While his angelic smile turning into a cynical stare, he has become reborn for revenge. There will be no old Goni until he gets revenge. He defeated powerful tazzas from the nation in a queue, and finally comes to sit at the table opposite A-Gui. The real game starts from now, and I will throw my cards all my life in the name of revenge.

Nan Sook (played by Han Ye Seul)

"If I sell my flesh now, I will make no more than hundred thousand dollars.
But if I use it differently, I can make at least half million dollars."

There is a dull and shoddy counter table at a billiard hall. If she sits behind it, she can make it bright.
She is a girl with mysterious coldness and charm. She is the first love to Goni and Young Min.
When her brother happened to step in the hwatoo game that A-Gui planned, her life changed. He not only lost the building (probably his family owned), but also had Nan Sook be sold to Kye Dong Choon.
Liking Nan Sook at first sight, Madam Jung took her with a mind to raise her as a tazza. Nan Sook goes to school during the day, while at night, working and learning hwatoo games at the room-salon and house Madam Jung manages for business.
YoungMin's love to her, rough and clumsy, but genuine, is a luxury to a broken soul NanSook. But after meeting Goni again, she recovers her smile. Their dating, with each unaware of what the other is, continues until they encounter each other at the house. Goni is washed off there. NanSook later comes to know AGui and Young were behind her misfortune. The elaborate execution of her revenge starts in the name of Goni's and her loss of happiness.

He did not want to give his grand mom any concern who raised him alone..
When he first saw Goni who was able to conquer him with such mild eyes, he became interested in Goni, with unexplainable bewilderment.
He thought he did not need more friends if he had Goni as a friend.
At the death of his beloved grandmother, he cried and cried, with his heart filled with rage against the cruelty of the world. He chose to be under Agui's wings to be a hardboiled gambler, a divergent path that leads him to being opposite Goni. Their destiny as rivals becomes clearer as YounMin takes Goni's love NanSook to the world of evils, the gambling world and causes the death of Daeho, the person whose being is like a father to Goni.

Go Kwang Reol (played by Son Hyun Joo)

A braggart, talking nonsense and rubbish non-stop

He is so talkative to be often laughed at as playing a hwatoo game with his mouth. But he can't help it.
He is a sympathetic, softhearted, and warmhearted tazza.
He is the best friend and like a brother to Goni. Whenever Goni gets in trouble, he gives Goni a fundamental help, but at the same time it is he who often gets Goni into trouble. He always stays next to Goni, helping him defeat the AGui's party one by one.

A-Gui (played by Kim Kap Soo)

"Do you know who cut off this finger? It's him! I've never forgotten what this cut finger means at any single day for the last 20 years."

He is a legend of the tazza world, but at the same time a figure of extreme evil.
He is notorious for the eccentric habit that if he wins a game he cut off the opponent's wrist.
When people see him in person, they get appalled at the wicked ice he gives off.
He is a dandy in white traditional clothes with a cigar, but they can't hide his evil charisma.
He operates a big national chain of Houses with professional tazzas. He dares to buy the nation through gambling and the casino business plays a central role in his ambition.

Other Core Figures:

PyunG Kyung Jang (played by Lim Hyun Shik)

The legendary gambling guru from whom A-Gui and DaeHo learned hwatoo. A-Gui and DaeHo are the second generation of legendary tazzas, while Pyun Gyung Jang and JjakGui are the first generation.
He left the gambling world and lived quietly when he had a conflict with his daughter about the death of his wife. He looks like a street philosopher who seems to master the truth of fortune. After seeing Goni's determination, he helped Goni grow up as the number one tazza of the nation.

Dae Ho (played by Lee Ki Yeol)

A friend of Goni's father. He owns a small photo shop across Goni's restaurant.
He, an ordinary-looking guy, looks like none, but has a brilliant smile on him that makes him look generous to anything happening in the world. No one knows he hides sharp eyes behind that smile.
No one can imagine he was the guy nick-named ' chaffcutter of Mountain JeeRhee' a legendary gambler before he settled down here. When his best friend Goni's father died, he played a fateful game opposite AGui.

SoonIm (Goni's mother) (played by Park Soon Cheon)

She who lived a peaceful everyday life, suddenly became a widow when her husband played hwatoo games in hopes of making some money out of cash shortage and died accidently. Her tragedy didn't end here. She also had to watch her son be troubled by being involved in gambling. Despite all tragedies, she, a warm-hearted mother, stays there all the time for her son.

Kye Dong Choon (played by Jang Won Young)

Second in power in A-Gui's party, nick-named as 'spindrier'
He is notorious for collecting gambling debts in wicked ways. His nickname comes from his evilness that he can extract water even out of squid jerky. One of his strengths is he encroaches on non-affiliated houses until they surrender.
Wearing colorful suits, a ring on each single finger and a scarf around the neck, he looks like a typical upstart. Come closer, you feel like you smell a disgusting industrial oil flavor from him and see his evil eyes. He doesn't feel comfortable with Young Min who just joined their team as a tazza chosen by AGui because he looks like a threat to his position, second in power. Besides, he comes to know Madame Jung, who he has a crush on, keeps her eyes on him. He attempts to slander YoungMin to kick him off of their team.

Kwang Cheol (played by Oh Jung Se)

NanSook's brother.
After being washed off, he deliberately set a fire to AGui's House, ending up being in jail. After being discharged from jail, he determined to revenge her sister NanSook's misfortune on AGui's party. But he again becomes the Achilles heel of her sister as he jumped into gambling again, leaving him in debt and thereby enslaved to AGui's party.

CITAZIONE
Thanks wils . You have sharp eyes! I missed those symbolisms watching the trailers.
Anywya just to help clarify
the first card is Jang Hyuk (Ddong Kwang -- bird+flower)
the second card is Han Ye Seul (Sam Kwang -- flowers)
the third is Kim Min Joon (Bi Kwang -- man with umbrella)
the fourth is Kang Sung Yeon (Sol Kwang (?) -- crane)

There's still one more Kwang card...the Pal Gong Kwang (sp?) --the one with the white circle. I guess this belongs to A-Gui (Kim Gap Soo)? Hehehehe..we really are spending a lot of time on hwatu cards... learning a lot about them too laugh.gif

I kindda wish Ye Seul's card is Bi Kwang...considering she posed with the umbrella.

Secondo trailer.

Sotto spoiler troverete altri video e altre foto molto interessanti.
L'ultima.

Kim Min-joon gets a leg up on Jang Hyuk
September 1st, 2008 // by javabeans

image

Stars Jang Hyuk and Kim Min-joon of new drama Tazza take a leap of faith (har, har) from a bridge in Busan in recent shoots for the series.

This particular scene takes place when the two hoodlums are chased to the bridge and escape by jumping the railing and landing on a speeding truck. To get the shot just right, Jang Hyuk and Kim Min-joon filmed the bridge sequence approximately ten times with the help of stunt wires, in spite of the muggy summer heat. Also present at the shoot were residents of the city of Busan, who’ll be able to see the finished product in the September 16 airing of the SBS drama.

(Not to belabor Tazza’s comparison to its direct competitor East of Eden, but doesn’t this seem a teeny bit similar to EOE’s dramatic balcony jump scene?)

A black press day for Tazza
September 8th, 2008 // by javabeans

image

Tazza actors and crew (Jang Hyuk, Han Ye-seul, Kim Min-joon, Kang Sung-yeon) came out on the afternoon of September 8 for the drama’s production press conference, all decked out in black to observe the death of Ahn Jae-hwan, which they’d received word of just earlier that day.

Apparently the actors put on a bright face for photos, but they became solemn at the mention of Ahn Jae-hwan. The drama’s new Madam Jung, Kang Sung-yeon, expressed her feelings upon hearing the sad news: “I couldn’t believe it. This was to be a good day for me [drama press day], but now I don’t know what I should say… Afterward, I’ll go to his funeral service. I’m so heartbroken I don’t know what to say.”

Regarding the drama itself, PD Kang Shin-ho explained: “Because there were previously a famous manhwa and a movie, there was some pressure, and I went through a process of trial and error. I put a lot of effort trying to use the gambling world to portray the ups and downs of the larger world. I hope people will like it.”

The Monday-Tuesday drama takes its place opposite MBC’s East of Eden and KBS’s Love & Marriage on September 16.
